Plot:

The story opens with Macbeth, a valiant Scottish general, leading his forces to victory in battle. Returning home, he and his fellow general Banquo encounter three witches who prophesy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and then King, while Banquo's descendants will be kings. Soon after, Macbeth is indeed named Thane of Cawdor. Fueled by this partial fulfillment and the manipulative influence of his wife, Lady Macbeth, he resolves to seize the throne by murdering the benevolent King Duncan during a visit to their castle.

Haunted by guilt but increasingly ruthless, Macbeth ascends to the throne. To secure his power and defy the witches' prophecy regarding Banquo, he orders the murder of Banquo and his son Fleance, though Fleance escapes. Macbeth's paranoia intensifies, leading him to consult the witches again, who offer ambiguous prophecies: he cannot be harmed by any man "of woman born" and will not be vanquished until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane. Believing himself invincible, Macbeth descends further into tyranny, ordering the massacre of Macduff's family.

Lady Macbeth, consumed by guilt, succumbs to madness and dies. As English forces, led by Malcolm and Macduff, advance on Dunsinane, they disguise themselves with branches from Birnam Wood, seemingly fulfilling the prophecy. Macbeth confronts Macduff, who reveals he was "from his mother's womb untimely ripped," not "of woman born." In a brutal duel, Macduff slays Macbeth, bringing an end to his tyrannical reign. Malcolm is then proclaimed the new King of Scotland, but the film ends with a lingering shot of Fleance, hinting at the cyclical nature of power and prophecy.
