Main Hoon Albela (Manam Kothi Paravai) (2012)
Summary
Manam Kothi Paravai (transl. The heart's Woodpecker) is a 2012 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film set in a rural backdrop. It is a story about a young, carefree man's unconditional love for his childhood friend and neighbor, whose powerful and intimidating family arranges her marriage elsewhere. The plot follows his comical and desperate attempts, with the help of his friends, to win her heart and stop the marriage, leading to unexpected twists in the relationship. The film was a commercial hit and a breakthrough in the career of the lead actor, Sivakarthikeyan.
Plot
Kannan (Sivakarthikeyan) is a simple, good-hearted youth who assists his father in their construction business and spends his time with his close-knit group of friends in his village. He is deeply in love with his childhood friend and neighbor, Revathy (Athmeeya), but her father and uncles are the most feared "goons" in the village, making it impossible for him to confess his feelings openly.
When Kannan finally gathers the courage to reveal his love, he receives a shocking blow: Revathy's family has arranged her marriage to an influential cousin. Determined to prevent the marriage, Kannan's friends from the city formulate a plan to kidnap Revathy in a comical, yet failed, attempt.
During the ensuing chaos, Revathy is separated from her family and is confronted by Kannan. In a major twist, she initially claims she only considers him a friend. However, she eventually reveals that she, too, is deeply in love with Kannan, but kept her feelings a secret because expressing them would put his life in danger from her powerful family.
The couple is eventually separated when Revathy's family catches up to them, and Kannan is forced to leave the village.
The story fast-forwards two years. Kannan returns from working as an engineer in Oman, a more mature and wealthier man, still carrying a torch for Revathy, who remains unmarried. He meets her and proposes that they finally get married. In the film's climactic moment, Revathy's father barges in on their meeting. Instead of harming Kannan as expected, the father, having observed the true depth of Kannan's love and the misery it has caused Revathy, finally accepts their relationship and asks Kannan to leave the house with Revathy.
