Summary:

Michael (2023) is a Telugu-language neo-noir action thriller set against the dark backdrop of the 1980s Mumbai underworld. Plot:

The story is primarily set in the 1980s, tracing the life of Michael (Sundeep Kishan), an ambitious young man with a tumultuous past. He is taken under the wing of Gurunath (Gautham Vasudev Menon), a formidable crime boss operating out of Bombay. Michael is mentored by Gurunath and practically raised by his trusted henchman, Swamy (Ayyappa P. Sharma). Michael eventually becomes a trusted asset in Gurunath's criminal empire, though he is constantly rebuffed by Gurunath's entitled son, Amarnath (Varun Sandesh), and wife, Charulatha (Anasuya Bharadwaj).

The inciting incident occurs when Gurunath is attacked by a rival gang, and he tasks Michael with eliminating the mastermind: his rival, Rathan (Anish Kuruvilla), and Rathan's daughter, Theera (Divyansha Kaushik). Michael travels to his destination to carry out the contract killing, but his focus quickly shifts upon meeting Theera. Despite his mission, he develops a genuine and intense romantic relationship with her.

The narrative shifts dramatically when Michael's loyalty is tested. He is captured along with Theera and Rathan and brought before Amarnath. Amarnath reveals a shocking truth: he orchestrated the attack on his own father, Gurunath, to usurp the leadership. Furthermore, he reveals that Theera initially pretended to love Michael as part of a setup, though she has now truly fallen for him.

Amarnath kills Rathan and brutally shoots Michael, leaving him for dead in the sea. Michael miraculously survives and begins his vengeful return. He systematically infiltrates Amarnath’s hideout, eliminates his men, and finally kills Amarnath. Michael escapes with Theera and informs Gurunath of his son's death and betrayal.

Gurunath, however, is not satisfied and vows revenge against Michael. He places a massive bounty on Michael and Theera, offering his position as the new crime boss to whoever kills them. The final act involves Michael and Theera fighting for survival against Gurunath's extensive network of assassins. The film culminates in Michael confronting Gurunath and Charulatha, where he unveils the full truth of his past: he is Gurunath’s illegitimate son, born from an affair Gurunath had with Michael's mother, Jennifer (Deepshikha). Charulatha, enraged by the affair, had attempted to kill Jennifer years ago. Swamy, who knew the truth, had been protecting Michael all along.

Michael, seeking justice for his mother, kills both Gurunath and Charulatha, thus avenging the injustice done to his family. Michael and Theera reunite and take control of Gurunath’s empire. The ending sets up a future conflict with Gurunath's twin brother, who swears revenge against Michael for Gurunath’s death.
