Summary:
Retired IMF agent Ethan Hunt is drawn back into the field when his protégé is captured by a ruthless arms dealer, Owen Davian. The mission quickly becomes personal as Davian threatens Ethan's fiancée, Julia. With the help of his IMF team, Ethan embarks on a dangerous race against time to stop Davian from acquiring a mysterious bioweapon and save the woman he loves.
Plot:
Ethan Hunt has retired from active field work for the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) and is now training new recruits while leading a seemingly normal life with his fiancée, Julia Meade, a nurse who believes he works for the traffic department. His peaceful existence is shattered when IMF Director of Operations John Musgrave approaches him with an urgent mission: rescue Ethan's former protégé, Lindsey Farris, who has been captured while investigating the dangerous and unpredictable arms dealer Owen Davian in Berlin.
Ethan assembles his team: his trusted longtime partner Luther Stickell, the skilled transportation expert Declan Gormley, and the resourceful operative Zhen Lei. They successfully infiltrate a warehouse in Berlin and rescue Lindsey, but their escape is fraught with peril. During the extraction, they discover a lethal micro-explosive device has been surgically implanted in Lindsey's head, which is detonated by Davian remotely, killing her.
Haunted by Lindsey's death and determined to bring Davian to justice, Ethan learns that Davian is in Vatican City to acquire a mysterious and highly dangerous biological weapon codenamed "the Rabbit's Foot." Against the orders of IMF Director Theodore Brassel, Ethan and his team head to the Vatican. In a daring operation, they successfully capture Davian.
As they transport Davian back to the United States via a heavily guarded convoy across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the convoy is ambushed by Davian's mercenaries. Davian is brutally freed, and during the attack, Ethan receives a chilling message: Davian knows about Julia and will come after her.
True to his word, Davian's forces kidnap Julia from the hospital where she works. Davian contacts Ethan, demanding the Rabbit's Foot in exchange for Julia's life within 48 hours. Ethan is subsequently apprehended by the IMF and interrogated about Davian's escape. During the interrogation, Musgrave subtly reveals that the Rabbit's Foot is in Shanghai and helps Ethan escape IMF custody.
Ethan reunites with his team in Shanghai, where they manage to obtain the Rabbit's Foot. He delivers the device to Davian, who double-crosses him, tranquilizes him, and implants a similar micro-explosive in Ethan's head. When Ethan awakens, he finds Davian holding a gagged Julia at gunpoint.
In a tense standoff, Davian demands the location of the Rabbit's Foot. Despite Ethan's claims of having delivered the real item, Davian appears to shoot Julia (who is actually Davian's translator disguised to ensure the authenticity of the Rabbit's Foot). Musgrave then arrives, revealing himself as a traitor within the IMF, working with Davian to acquire the Rabbit's Foot for his own nefarious purposes.
Ethan manages to subdue Musgrave and, with the help of IMF technician Benji Dunn (who joins the team in Shanghai), tracks Julia's real location. He confronts Davian again, and a brutal fight ensues. During the struggle, Davian activates the explosive in Ethan's head. Ethan ultimately defeats and kills Davian.
With the clock ticking, Ethan instructs a terrified Julia to use a makeshift defibrillator to deactivate the explosive in his head and teaches her how to use a gun for self-defense. Julia successfully deactivates the device and shoots Musgrave, who attempts to escape with the Rabbit's Foot.
Finally safe, Ethan reveals his true profession to Julia. Back in the United States, despite the unauthorized nature of his mission, Ethan is congratulated by his superiors, and he and Julia depart for their honeymoon.
