Plot:

The film opens with IMF agent Ethan Hunt intercepting a shipment of nerve gas from a group of Chechen separatists in Belarus. Despite successfully securing the gas, Hunt is left behind as his plane takes off, only to find himself clinging to the side of the aircraft as it ascends. He manages to climb inside, completing the mission, but the incident underscores the precarious nature of the IMF's operations. Back in Washington D.C., CIA Director Alan Hunley testifies before a Senate committee, successfully arguing for the dissolution of the IMF, citing its reckless methods and excessive collateral damage. William Brandt, a former IMF field agent now working for the CIA, defends Hunt and the agency, but to no avail. The IMF is officially disbanded, its assets absorbed by the CIA, and Hunt becomes a wanted fugitive.

Meanwhile, Hunt, convinced that a shadowy organization known as the Syndicate is real – a "rogue nation" of highly trained, disavowed operatives – goes off-grid to hunt them down. He tracks a lead to a safe house in London, only to be ambushed and captured by the Syndicate. He awakens in a torture chamber, restrained and facing the chilling leader of the Syndicate, Solomon Lane, who ominously explains his group's purpose. Before Lane can execute him, Hunt is unexpectedly rescued by a mysterious British agent named Ilsa Faust, who appears to be working for the Syndicate but subtly aids his escape. Hunt instructs Benji to attend the premiere of the opera "Turandot" in Vienna, where he suspects a Syndicate assassination attempt will occur. In Vienna, Hunt, Benji, and Ilsa converge. Hunt foils the attempt, saving the Chancellor, but three assassins are killed, and Ilsa escapes, leaving Hunt once again questioning her loyalty.

Ilsa reveals that the "ledger" is actually an encrypted data drive, secured in an impenetrable underwater server farm beneath a power station. The facility requires biometric authentication from multiple sources and a precise, timed breach of a cooling system that will kill anyone attempting it without holding their breath for several minutes.

The team devises a plan. Benji, equipped with an advanced hacking device, will swap out the data drive while Hunt disables the security. Hunt undertakes the perilous dive, enduring immense pressure and near-drowning to reach the server. He successfully breaches the security, but the strain causes him to go into cardiac arrest. Ilsa, who was supposed to be providing support, resuscitates him. However, when Hunt recovers, Ilsa takes the encrypted drive and escapes, leaving Benji with a blank drive. Hunt's trust in Ilsa is shattered, and he realizes she has been playing a dangerous triple game between MI6, the Syndicate, and his own team.

Ilsa delivers the drive to Lane, but before he can access it, she attempts to escape. Lane, however, anticipates her move and recaptures her. Hunt and Benji manage to track Ilsa to London, where they are joined by Luther and Brandt. They learn that Ilsa is a disavowed MI6 agent, forced to infiltrate the Syndicate to retrieve the drive. Her MI6 handler, Attlee, has been pressuring her to deliver the data. Hunt realizes that Lane doesn't need to decrypt the data; he needs *Hunt* to decrypt it. Lane has planted a bomb on Benji, threatening to detonate it unless Hunt delivers the original, decrypted drive. Hunt realizes that the data isn't a ledger of names, but a key to a vast network of funds, a "red box" containing billions of dollars that Lane intends to use to fund global terror.

In a tense standoff in London, Hunt confronts Lane. Lane has Benji at gunpoint, demanding the data. Hunt, knowing the data is now in his head, offers to exchange it for Benji's life. Ilsa, who has been forced to work with Lane, finds herself caught between her mission and her conscience. A complex chase ensues through the streets of London, involving Hunt, Ilsa, Lane, and his operatives. Ilsa confronts Lane, engaging him in a brutal knife fight. Hunt, meanwhile, uses the city's infrastructure to outwit Lane, eventually trapping him in a bulletproof containment cell, similar to the one he used for Benji earlier. The "red box" funds are secured, the Syndicate's network is crippled, and Lane is apprehended.
