A psychological thriller about a man who is sometimes controlled by his murder-and-mayhem-loving alter ego.

Mr. Brooks (2007)

Summary:

Mr. Brooks is a 2007 American psychological thriller film directed by Bruce A. Evans and starring Kevin Costner in one of his most chilling performances. The movie explores the double life of Earl Brooks, a respected businessman and loving family man who secretly struggles with an uncontrollable urge to kill. His murderous alter ego, "Marshall," played by William Hurt, fuels his dark side, creating a gripping internal conflict. When Earl’s life becomes entangled with a clever detective and a dangerous witness, the film dives deep into themes of addiction, morality, identity, and the darkest corners of human nature.

Plot:

Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner) appears to be the perfect man — a successful businessman, a caring husband, and a respected figure in the community. However, beneath this polished exterior lies a deadly secret: Earl is also the infamous "Thumbprint Killer," a serial killer who leaves a unique mark on his victims. Despite trying to suppress his violent urges, Earl is constantly manipulated and provoked by his sinister inner voice, Marshall (William Hurt), who embodies his darker desires.

After resisting the impulse for years, Earl gives in once more and murders a couple in their apartment. But this time, he makes a critical mistake — he forgets to close the curtains. A voyeuristic photographer named Mr. Smith witnesses the murder and decides to blackmail Earl, not for money, but for the thrill of being part of the killing. Earl, now trapped, must navigate the dangerous game of a reckless accomplice who wants to learn from him.

Meanwhile, Detective Tracy Atwood (Demi Moore) is determined to catch the Thumbprint Killer. She is intelligent, driven, and dealing with her own personal battles, making her pursuit even more intense. As she gets closer to unraveling the case, Earl must stay one step ahead to protect his family and himself.

Complicating matters further, Earl’s daughter Jane (Danielle Panabaker) unexpectedly returns home, carrying dark secrets of her own. When Earl suspects that she may have inherited his violent tendencies, he must confront the horrifying possibility that his legacy of darkness is passing on to the next generation.

The climax builds as Earl balances three threats at once: the blackmailing witness, a relentless detective, and the truth about his daughter. In a series of tense and unpredictable twists, Earl attempts to maintain control over the chaos he created. The film ends with a shocking revelation that forces viewers to question whether evil is a choice, a disease, or something that runs in the blood.
