Summary:

Inspector Chan Kwok-Wing, a highly respected Hong Kong police officer, is plunged into a downward spiral of guilt and alcoholism after his entire elite team is massacred by a sadistic gang of young, tech-savvy criminals led by the enigmatic Joe. A year later, a determined young rookie, Frank Cheng, enters Chan's life, determined to help him overcome his trauma and bring the ruthless gang to justice, leading to a perilous journey of redemption and a brutal final confrontation.

Plot (Movie Story):

The film opens with Senior Inspector Chan Kwok-Wing (Jackie Chan) as a celebrated and seemingly invincible police officer in the Hong Kong police force. He is known for his exemplary arrest record and his unwavering confidence. However, his life takes a catastrophic turn when he leads his elite team into a trap set by a ruthless and psychologically twisted gang of young criminals, led by the enigmatic Joe Kwan (Daniel Wu). Joe and his gang—Tin-Tin (Andy On), Fire (Terence Yin), Sue (Coco Chiang), and Max (Hiro Hayama)—are rich, bored delinquents who commit bank robberies not for money, but for the thrill of killing police officers, turning their crimes into violent video games to be uploaded online.

In a highly orchestrated and brutal ambush, Joe's gang outmaneuvers and massacres Chan's entire team in a booby-trapped warehouse. Chan is the sole survivor, forced to helplessly witness the deaths of his colleagues and friends, including his girlfriend Ho Yee's younger brother. The trauma pushes him into a year-long spiral of alcoholism and self-blame, making him a disgraced and broken figure within the force.

A year later, a seemingly enthusiastic and fresh-faced young man, Frank Cheng Siu-Fung (Nicholas Tse), appears and claims to be Chan's new partner. Frank is a rookie officer, determined to help Chan overcome his demons and bring Joe's gang to justice. Chan initially resists, preferring to drown his sorrows, but Frank's persistence and a surprising display of combat skills (when he apprehends two petty thieves who robbed a drunk Chan) eventually convince him to get back on his feet.

As they begin to investigate, Chan's former colleague, Chief Inspector Chiu Chan, who blames Chan's arrogance for the disaster, challenges them to solve the case before he does. Frank, however, has a secret: he's not actually a police officer; he failed his police academy exam but is desperate to become one and believes helping Chan is his way to redemption. He also has a deeper, personal connection to Chan that he initially conceals.

The investigation leads them deeper into the gang's world. They discover that the gang members come from wealthy and influential families, and Joe himself is the son of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Liu Kai-chi). This revelation highlights the corruption and power struggles within the system. The gang continues its spree of violent crimes, taunting the police with their online videos.

Chan and Frank, with the help of Frank's police friend Sa Sa (Charlene Choi), piece together clues and realize the gang's next target is the Bank of Hong Kong. To prevent another massacre, Chan makes the unprecedented decision to evacuate the building and bring in the gang members' parents, hoping to appeal to their humanity.

A climactic confrontation ensues at the bank and then on the rooftop of a skyscraper. The gang members are gradually defeated or turn on each other, with Joe even killing his own gang members for showing weakness or surrendering. In the final showdown on the rooftop, Joe corners Chan, holding Frank hostage. Joe reveals his motive: a deep-seated hatred for his powerful, neglectful father who constantly belittled him, driving him to commit these heinous acts to prove his power and destroy what his father represents.

Joe challenges Chan to a race to assemble a pistol, which Chan wins through a clever maneuver. As the police, including Joe's father, arrive on the rooftop, Chan tries to reason with Joe. Joe, defeated but defiant, aims his empty gun at Chan and then at his own father, forcing the police to open fire, effectively committing suicide by cop.

Chan rushes to save Frank, and both fall from the building, landing safely on a firemen's inflated cushion below. Joe's father, overwhelmed by guilt, resigns from his position. In the hospital, Ho Yee recovers and accepts Chan's marriage proposal. Frank is arrested for impersonating an officer, but Chan visits him, revealing that he remembers comforting Frank as a child when Frank's father was killed in an accident, inspiring Frank to want to become a policeman and repay Chan's kindness. The film ends with Chan acknowledging Frank's potential and suggesting he will be a true policeman in the future.
