In the heart of Cambodia, a corrupt Prime Minister, eager to line his pockets, seals a lucrative deal with Cardiff, a powerful American corporation specializing in water systems. The deal, a seemingly benevolent act of foreign aid, would ultimately leave the Cambodian people at the mercy of foreign corporations, their most vital resource – water – now controlled by outside interests.
Unbeknownst to the Prime Minister, a simmering wave of discontent had been brewing among the populace. A group of armed rebels, fueled by anger and desperation, launched a swift and brutal coup d'état, assassinating the Prime Minister and plunging the nation into chaos.
Seventeen hours earlier, Jack Dwyer, a newly appointed engineer for Cardiff, arrived in Cambodia with his wife, Annie, and their two young daughters, Lucy and Briegel ("Beeze"). Their arrival coincided with the burgeoning unrest, a fact they were blissfully unaware of. At the airport, they encountered Hammond, a seasoned British traveler, and his local friend, Kenny Rogers, who offered them a ride to their hotel, unwittingly drawing the unsuspecting Dwyers into the heart of the impending storm.
The next morning, while venturing out to buy a newspaper, Jack stumbled upon a violent clash between government forces and a surging tide of angry protesters. The streets erupted in chaos as the rebels, armed with a potent mix of rage and desperation, overwhelmed the police. Jack, witnessing the brutal execution of an American citizen, narrowly escaped the carnage, forced to flee into his hotel through a window.

With the help of a stolen map, the Dwyers, disguised as locals, embarked on a perilous journey towards the American embassy, only to find it overrun and deserted. They sought refuge in a serene Buddhist shrine garden, unaware that their sanctuary was about to be shattered.
A group of rebels, led by the ruthless Samnang, cornered the Dwyers. As Jack attempted to disarm one of the rebels, Annie, in a desperate act of bravery, drew their attention away from him. However, Jack's attempt to shoot Samnang failed, leaving him at the mercy of his captors. Samnang, consumed by a lust for power and revenge, prepared to rape Annie.
Just as Samnang was about to carry out his horrific act, Hammond and Kenny Rogers burst onto the scene, unleashing a hail of gunfire that decimated the rebel group. Hammond, a man of secrets, revealed his true identity: a covert operative working for the British government. He confessed that he had been a key player in the very system that had fueled the rebellion, a modern-day "Economic Hit Man" who had convinced impoverished nations to accept crippling loans for infrastructure projects, ultimately leaving them at the mercy of Western corporations.
With their escape route cut off, Hammond, mortally wounded in the ensuing firefight, made the ultimate sacrifice, diverting the attention of a pursuing rebel truck to ensure the Dwyers' survival.
Reaching the riverbank, Annie and the children found refuge while Jack, in a desperate trade, secured a small boat from a local fisherman. However, their escape was cut short. Samnang, miraculously surviving the previous encounter, returned with a small band of rebels, capturing Jack and holding Lucy at gunpoint.
Samnang, in a chilling act of psychological torture, forced Lucy to choose between her father's life and her own. Before Lucy could make the agonizing decision, Annie, driven by primal instinct, intervened, bludgeoning Samnang to death with an oar. Jack, seizing the opportunity, killed the remaining rebels, freeing his family from the grip of death.
With renewed determination, the Dwyers paddled furiously downriver, their eyes fixed on the distant Vietnamese border. They were spotted by another group of rebels, but as they neared the border, the Vietnamese border guards, alarmed by the escalating violence, intervened. A tense standoff ensued, with the Vietnamese guards threatening to open fire if the rebels crossed the border. The rebels, unwilling to provoke an international incident, retreated, leaving the Dwyers to escape into the relative safety of Vietnam.
Exhausted but alive, the Dwyers finally found refuge in a local hospital. Jack, recovering from his ordeal, grappled with the profound changes that had irrevocably altered their lives. The idyllic vacation had become a harrowing odyssey, a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of global politics, corporate greed, and human suffering.
The echoes of the Cambodian revolution would forever haunt them, a constant reminder of the fragility of peace and the devastating consequences of unchecked power and the relentless pursuit of profit.
