Plot:

The film opens by introducing four distinct magicians: J. Daniel Atlas, an arrogant street illusionist; Merritt McKinney, a washed-up mentalist and hypnotist; Henley Reeves, a daring escape artist and Atlas's former assistant; and Jack Wilder, a street magician and master of sleight of hand. Each receives a mysterious tarot card invitation to a dilapidated New York City apartment, where they discover blueprints for an elaborate magic trick. One year later, the four are performing together as "The Four Horsemen," sponsored by insurance magnate Arthur Tressler, in a sold-out Las Vegas show. Their grand finale involves teleporting a volunteer from the audience to a bank vault in Paris, France, where he seemingly triggers a vacuum system that sucks up millions of euros. The money then rains down on the Las Vegas audience, confirmed by the bank to be the actual stolen funds. This audacious act immediately draws the attention of the FBI.

FBI Agent Dylan Rhodes and Interpol Agent Alma Dray are assigned to the case. They interrogate the Horsemen, but with no physical evidence, they are forced to release them. Rhodes is a skeptic, convinced the magicians are merely criminals, while Dray is more open to the possibility of genuine magic or at least highly sophisticated illusion. They seek the help of Thaddeus Bradley, a former magician turned illusion debunker, who explains how the Paris bank heist could have been performed using a duplicate vault and sophisticated misdirection. The Horsemen announce their next show will be in New Orleans, promising to expose a corrupt wealthy individual. Rhodes and Dray follow, determined to stop them. During the New Orleans performance, the Horsemen target Arthur Tressler himself, accusing him of defrauding his clients after Hurricane Katrina. They reveal his offshore bank account, emptying it of $140 million and showering the money onto the audience, who are revealed to be the very victims Tressler defrauded. Tressler is humiliated and financially ruined, swearing revenge.

The investigation intensifies as Rhodes becomes increasingly frustrated by the Horsemen's ability to stay one step ahead. He and Dray discover cryptic clues left behind by the Horsemen, including a locket with the symbol of "The Eye," an ancient, legendary secret society of magicians said to possess true magic. They also find a series of seemingly random letters – T.I.T.S. – which they struggle to decipher. Bradley continues to offer explanations for the Horsemen's tricks, further fueling Rhodes's skepticism and Dray's growing belief that there's a deeper purpose behind the illusions. The Horsemen manage to escape multiple traps set by the FBI, often using their stagecraft to create diversions and vanish into thin air. Rhodes's pursuit becomes personal, as he feels increasingly outsmarted and humiliated by the magicians, leading him to believe one of them is an inside man, or that there's a fifth member.

The chase culminates in a thrilling car pursuit through the streets of New York, where Jack Wilder, attempting to destroy incriminating evidence, crashes his car and it explodes, seemingly killing him. The remaining three Horsemen go into hiding, but soon announce their final performance in New York City. Rhodes, devastated by Wilder's apparent death, focuses his efforts on capturing the remaining Horsemen. He and Dray piece together more clues, including a connection to a magic prop company and the apartment where the Horsemen first met, which turns out to be linked to a legendary magician named Lionel Shrike, who died years ago trying to perform an escape trick. The final show involves the Horsemen asking the audience to throw their phones into a giant safe, which is then opened to reveal not phones, but millions of dollars, once again distributed to the crowd. The FBI finally corners the three remaining Horsemen on a rooftop, arresting them.

During their interrogation, the Horsemen reveal that the money from the final trick was actually taken from Thaddeus Bradley's hidden safe, exposing him as the person who inadvertently led the FBI to them. Bradley is arrested, but the Horsemen escape from their cells, using a series of intricate illusions and diversions. Rhodes pursues them into Central Park, where he finds a carousel. There, the Horsemen reveal the true mastermind behind their grand scheme: Dylan Rhodes himself. Rhodes confesses that he is the son of Lionel Shrike, the magician who died attempting an escape trick years ago. He orchestrated the entire plan to seek revenge on the individuals he held responsible for his father's death: the bank that denied his father's insurance claim (the Paris bank), Arthur Tressler who sold his father a faulty safe (the New Orleans trick), and Thaddeus Bradley, who debunked his father's act and ruined his reputation (the final trick). Jack Wilder's death was faked, using a dummy and a magic trick, and he was the one who helped Rhodes set up Bradley.

The Horsemen, now understanding Rhodes's motivation and the true depth of his illusion, accept him as the fifth Horseman and welcome him into "The Eye." Rhodes then meets Alma Dray on a bridge overlooking the Seine in Paris. He reveals his true identity and the full scope of his plan to her, explaining that he allowed her to piece together clues because he trusted her. He gives her a magically appearing key, which she uses to unlock a box containing a photo of his father and a card for "The Eye."
