Summary:
One Day is a 2011 romantic drama film directed by Lone Scherfig and adapted by David Nicholls from his 2009 novel of the same name. It stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess in the lead roles. The film follows the lives of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, who meet on July 15, 1988, the night of their university graduation. Plot:
Emma Morley, a working-class aspiring writer with idealistic dreams, and Dexter Mayhew, a wealthy and charming young man with a sense of entitlement, spend the night together after their graduation from the University of Edinburgh. Despite their differences, they feel a strong connection but decide to remain friends.
The film revisits Emma and Dexter each year on July 15th, St. Swithin's Day, to chronicle their evolving relationship. Over the years, Dexter travels the world, pursues a career in television, and struggles with fame and addiction, while Emma works as a teacher, pursues her passion for writing, and navigates unfulfilling relationships.
Their lives intertwine and diverge as they experience personal and professional successes and failures. They go through periods of closeness and distance, marked by missed opportunities, misunderstandings, and the complexities of their individual journeys. Despite the passage of time and the challenges they face, an undeniable bond remains between them.
As the years pass, both Emma and Dexter undergo significant personal growth and transformation. Dexter eventually hits rock bottom and begins to reassess his life, while Emma gains confidence and achieves success as a writer. After years of friendship and romantic entanglements with other people, they finally come to realize that they are meant to be together.
However, their happiness is tragically cut short when Emma is killed in a bicycle accident. Dexter is devastated and must learn to cope with the loss of the woman he loved and the life they could have had together. The film poignantly explores themes of love, loss, friendship, fate, and the choices that shape our lives. The ending is both heartbreaking and thought-provoking, leaving the audience to reflect on the nature of relationships and the preciousness of time.
