Summary:
Out of the Furnace is a gritty crime drama set in the economically depressed Rust Belt of Pennsylvania. The film follows Russell Baze, a man struggling to survive and care for his family, including his younger brother, Rodney, a restless war veteran. When Rodney becomes involved in a dangerous and illegal bare-knuckle boxing ring, his life is put in jeopardy. Detailed Plot (Movie Story):
The film is set in the fictional town of North Braddock, Pennsylvania, and it paints a grim picture of a community struggling with economic hardship and despair. The story is centered on two brothers: Russell Baze (Christian Bale), a steel mill worker who is trying to live an honest life and take care of his family, and his younger brother, Rodney Baze, Jr. (Casey Affleck), a war veteran who is emotionally scarred by his time in the military and is unable to find a job.
Rodney, driven by a desire for money and a sense of restless energy, becomes involved in a series of illegal and dangerous bare-knuckle boxing matches. He is managed by John Petty (Willem Dafoe), a local bookmaker. To make more money, Petty arranges for Rodney to fight in a more dangerous and brutal league run by a ruthless and sadistic criminal, Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson), in the hills of West Virginia.
Meanwhile, Russell's life takes a turn for the worse. He gets into a drunk driving accident that kills a family, and he is sent to prison. While he is in prison, his father passes away, his girlfriend, Lena (Zoe Saldana), leaves him, and his brother, Rodney, falls deeper into the world of illegal fighting.
After serving his time, Russell returns home, only to find that his life has been completely upended. He tries to reconnect with his brother, but Rodney, desperate for a big win, goes to West Virginia for one last fight against a much more powerful opponent. He is convinced that this is the only way to get out of his misery.
The plot thickens when Rodney, after his last fight, has a confrontation with Harlan DeGroat and mysteriously disappears. The police, who are corrupt and have no interest in investigating a missing person in the hills, are of no help. Russell, with the help of his uncle, Red (Sam Shepard), a local police officer, and his former love, Lena, who has now moved on with Red, begins his own investigation.
The film's climax is a high-stakes and violent showdown. Russell, who has always tried to live a peaceful life, is forced to confront his own violent nature. He goes to the desolate and lawless hills of West Virginia, where he must face off against Harlan DeGroat and his gang. The film concludes with a final, brutal fight where Russell, with the help of his family and friends, avenges his brother's death and brings the culprits to justice.
