PAIN & GAIN (2013)
Summary:
Based on a true story, "Pain & Gain" follows a trio of bodybuilding enthusiasts in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, devise a scheme to kidnap, torture, and extort money and assets from a wealthy businessman. Their plan, however, quickly spirals into a series of increasingly violent and comically inept crimes, revealing the dark underbelly of ambition and the dangers of a misguided quest for wealth.
The film blends dark humor with its crime narrative, portraying the protagonists as both menacing and pathetically naive, constantly underestimating the consequences of their actions. It delves into themes of greed, the pursuit of an idealized lifestyle, and the often-unbelievable reality of true crime stories, all set against the vibrant backdrop of Miami.

Plot:
Daniel Lugo, a Miami bodybuilder and personal trainer, becomes frustrated with his mundane life and decides he deserves more. Inspired by motivational speakers, he convinces fellow bodybuilder Adrian Doorbal and former convict Paul Doyle to join him in a plan to extort money from wealthy client Victor Kershaw. Their initial attempt to kidnap Kershaw is clumsily executed, but they eventually succeed, subjecting him to weeks of torture and forcing him to sign over his assets and property.
Despite their attempts to murder him, Kershaw survives and contacts the police, who are initially skeptical due to his eccentric demeanor. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Kershaw hires retired private investigator Ed Du Bois III to track down his tormentors. Meanwhile, Lugo, Doorbal, and Doyle, enjoying their ill-gotten gains, quickly squander their wealth and decide to embark on another kidnapping scheme, targeting a new victim, Frank Griga, and his wife, Krisztina Furton.
The second kidnapping attempt also goes horribly wrong, leading to the accidental deaths of Griga and Furton. The "Sun Gym Gang" attempts to dispose of the bodies, further entangling themselves in a web of escalating violence and incompetence. Du Bois, through diligent investigation, begins to connect the dots between Kershaw's story and the new disappearances, ultimately leading him and the police to the three bodybuilders, culminating in their dramatic arrests.
