Summary

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is an action fantasy film adaptation of the popular video game series. The story follows Dastan, an adopted prince of Persia, who is framed for the murder of his adopted father, King Sharaman. Forced to go on the run with the beautiful and mysterious Princess Tamina of the holy city of Alamut, Dastan must prevent a villainous noble from obtaining an ancient magical dagger. The dagger holds the Sands of Time, a powerful relic that can reverse time, and if misused, has the power to destroy the world.

Plot

The story begins with Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal), a street urchin in ancient Persia, being adopted by King Sharaman for an act of courage. Years later, Dastan, along with his adopted brothers, Tus and Garsiv, is tricked by his uncle, Nizam (Ben Kingsley), into believing the holy city of Alamut is forging weapons for Persia's enemies. The Persian army conquers Alamut, and during the attack, Dastan acquires a unique dagger from a royal guard.

At a celebratory feast, Dastan presents a poisoned robe to the King, which fatally burns Sharaman. Nizam immediately accuses Dastan of the murder. Dastan escapes with Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) of Alamut, who secretly guards the powerful dagger. While on the run, Dastan discovers the dagger's power: the sand inside its hilt allows the wielder to reverse time for a brief period.

Dastan and Tamina are eventually captured by the shady but honorable merchant-bandit, Sheik Amar (Alfred Molina), who initially seeks the bounty on Dastan's head. After Dastan uses the dagger to save Amar's men from an ambush by the deadly Hassansins, Amar is convinced of Dastan's innocence and agrees to help them.

Dastan realizes that Nizam is the true mastermind, planning to use the Dagger of Time to plunge it into the massive Sandglass, a vessel of the Sands of Time, to undo an event in his past: saving his brother Sharaman from a lion attack. By preventing that heroic act, Nizam would become King. Tamina reveals that the Sands were a gift from the gods and that fully releasing them would bring about the end of the world.

The final confrontation takes place back in Alamut, deep within the temple housing the Sandglass. Dastan manages to reveal Nizam's treachery to Tus, but Nizam kills Tus and takes the dagger. Tamina sacrifices herself to give Dastan a chance to stop Nizam. Dastan then uses the dagger's full power, plunging it into the Sandglass to reverse time all the way back to the moment he first obtained the dagger during the siege of Alamut. With his knowledge of the future, Dastan exposes Nizam, who is defeated. Having been reset, Dastan is able to save Tamina's life, and the King's brother Tus proposes a marital alliance between Dastan and Tamina, creating a new, true bond between their people.
