Plot:

Remy, a rat with a highly developed sense of smell and taste, longs to be a chef, much to the dismay of his traditional rat colony. After being separated from his family during an escape from an elderly woman's house, Remy finds himself in the sewers of Paris, directly beneath Gusteau's, a restaurant founded by his culinary hero, the late Auguste Gusteau. He discovers Alfredo Linguini, a clumsy young man who has just been hired as a garbage boy, attempting to "fix" a dropped soup with disastrous results.

Remy secretly corrects the soup, which is accidentally served and surprisingly praised by the restaurant's only female chef, Colette Tatou. Skinner, the conniving head chef and Gusteau's former sous-chef, forces Linguini to recreate the soup. Remy and Linguini form a secret partnership: Remy hides under Linguini's toque, pulling his hair to control his movements and cook. This arrangement quickly makes Linguini a rising star, bringing fame back to Gusteau's and attracting the attention of the formidable food critic Anton Ego. However, their secret is constantly threatened by Skinner's suspicions and the challenges of maintaining their unusual collaboration, leading to a dramatic climax where Remy must rely on his entire rat colony to save the restaurant's reputation and fulfill his culinary dreams.
