REGRESSION (2015)
Summary:
In a small Minnesota town in 1990, Detective Bruce Kenner investigates the case of Angela Gray, a young woman who accuses her father, John Gray, of sexually abusing her as part of a satanic cult ritual. Despite admitting guilt, John has no memory of the alleged events, leading Kenner to enlist the help of renowned psychologist Dr. Kenneth Raines to recover Angela's repressed memories through regression therapy.
As Angela's memories surface, revealing horrifying details of the cult's activities and implicating other townspeople, Kenner delves deeper into the chilling mystery. However, the more he uncovers, the more he begins to doubt the veracity of the claims, forcing him to confront a disturbing truth that challenges his perceptions of reality and justice in this unsettling psychological thriller.

Plot:
The film opens in 1990, with Detective Bruce Kenner investigating the case of Angela Gray, who claims her father, John Gray, sexually abused her. John confesses to the crime but cannot recall any details, leading Kenner to suspect deeper issues. Angela also hints at a larger conspiracy involving a satanic cult.
To uncover the truth, Kenner brings in Dr. Kenneth Raines, a psychologist specializing in repressed memories. Through regression therapy, Angela begins to recall horrifying details of ritual abuse, implicating her grandmother, Rose, and other members of the community. As the accusations escalate, a wave of fear and suspicion sweeps through the town, fueled by the widespread "satanic panic" of the era. Kenner, initially convinced by Angela's testimony, starts to notice inconsistencies and strange occurrences, including threatening messages and shadowy figures following him.
As Kenner's investigation progresses, he finds evidence that contradicts the cult narrative. He discovers that Angela has a history of self-harm and a fragile mental state. A crucial piece of evidence, a photograph, leads him to question everything. The film culminates in a shocking revelation: there was no cult. Angela, suffering from severe psychological trauma and perhaps influenced by the prevailing hysteria, had fabricated the memories, potentially as a manifestation of her inner turmoil or a misunderstanding of actual events, with the "cult members" being innocent people she perceived as threatening due to her disturbed state. The true horror lies in the power of suggestion and the devastating impact of unfounded accusations.
