Summary:

Detailed Plot (Movie Story):
The film introduces Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson), a 21-year-old college student in New York City. He is an angry and aimless young man, still deeply affected by the suicide of his older brother, Michael, six years prior. This tragedy has created a massive rift between him and his wealthy, workaholic father, Charles (Pierce Brosnan). Tyler is extremely protective of his younger sister, Caroline (Ruby Jerins), who is a talented artist but is often bullied at school.
One night, Tyler gets into a street brawl and is arrested by Sergeant Neil Craig (Chris Cooper), a tough and protective single father. Tyler's roommate, Aidan (Tate Ellington), hatches a plan for revenge: he dares Tyler to date Neil's daughter, Ally (Emilie de Ravin), and then dump her to get back at the cop.
Ally, a student at NYU, is living her life to the fullest, a direct consequence of a traumatic experience: she witnessed the brutal murder of her mother on a subway platform when she was just a child. She is fiercely independent but is also closely watched by her overprotective father, Neil.
Tyler reluctantly goes along with the plan, but as he and Ally get to know each other, they discover a deep connection through their shared experiences of loss. Tyler reveals the pain of losing his brother, and Ally confides in him about witnessing her mother's death. Their relationship quickly becomes genuine and sincere. They fall in love, finding a much-needed sense of peace and understanding in each other's company.
The relationship is complicated by their respective fathers. Neil is suspicious of Tyler, while Charles's emotional distance and preoccupation with work continue to strain his relationship with his son and daughter. Tyler's relationship with his father is a central conflict, as he desperately tries to get Charles to be a more present figure in his and Caroline's life.
The truth about the initial dare eventually comes out, causing a temporary rift between Tyler and Ally. However, with help from Aidan, Ally realizes that Tyler genuinely loves her. Their love story and their family struggles intertwine as they try to find their way to a life of happiness.
The film's final act is a series of heartfelt moments that seem to bring resolution: Tyler and Ally reconcile, and Tyler's father, Charles, begins to make an effort to be a better father, starting with taking Caroline to school.
In the film's shocking and tragic conclusion, Tyler goes to wait for his father at his office, located on the 101st floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The final moments show the date being written on a blackboard in Caroline's classroom: September 11, 2001. The camera then cuts to Tyler looking out the window of the North Tower as the terrorist attack begins, followed by shots of his family reacting in horror. The film ends on this devastating reveal, transforming a simple love story into a poignant, fictionalized tribute to a victim of the 9/11 attacks, and a commentary on the fleeting nature of life.
