Plot:

The story begins with a flashback to Lah'mu, fifteen years before the main events. Galen Erso, a brilliant Imperial scientist, lives in hiding with his wife Lyra and young daughter Jyn. Their peace is shattered by the arrival of Imperial Director Orson Krennic, who forces Galen back into service to complete the Death Star, a superweapon he reluctantly helped design. Lyra is killed protecting Jyn, who escapes and is taken in by extremist rebel Saw Gerrera.

Years later, the Galactic Empire's reign of terror is absolute. Jyn Erso is an adult, estranged from Gerrera and held in an Imperial labor camp on Wobani. She is rescued by the Rebel Alliance, led by Captain Cassian Andor and his reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO. The Alliance seeks her help to contact Saw Gerrera, who has information about the Death Star. A defecting Imperial pilot, Bodhi Rook, has delivered a message from Galen Erso to Gerrera, revealing that the Death Star has a critical flaw deliberately built into its design. The Rebels believe Galen is a willing collaborator and task Cassian with finding him and, if possible, assassinating him.

Jyn, Cassian, and K-2SO travel to Jedha, a desert moon sacred to the Jedi, now occupied by the Empire and mined for kyber crystals to power the Death Star. They encounter Saw Gerrera's partisans and are caught in a skirmish. During the chaos, they meet Chirrut Îmwe, a blind spiritual warrior who believes in the Force, and his heavily armed companion Baze Malbus. The group is captured by Gerrera's forces. Inside Gerrera's hideout, Jyn is reunited with her adoptive father, who has become a paranoid and physically broken man. Bodhi Rook reveals Galen's message, a holographic recording explaining that he built a fatal weakness into the Death Star's reactor and that the plans are stored in an Imperial data archive on Scarif. As Jyn watches the message, the Death Star makes its first test firing, destroying Jedha City with a single, devastating blast. The team narrowly escapes the destruction, but Gerrera chooses to die with his city.

The team then travels to Eadu, where Galen is conducting research. Jyn plans to rescue her father, while Cassian, still under orders, prepares to assassinate him. A Rebel starfighter attack on the Imperial facility inadvertently kills Galen before Jyn can reach him, but not before he reaffirms his love for her and his hope in her mission. Devastated, Jyn learns of Cassian's assassination orders and confronts him. The group escapes Eadu with Bodhi, who is now fully committed to the Rebellion.

Back at the Rebel Alliance base on Yavin 4, Jyn presents Galen's message and urges the council to retrieve the Death Star plans from Scarif. However, the council, demoralized and fearful of the Empire's new superweapon, votes against a full-scale assault. Undeterred, Jyn, Cassian, K-2SO, Bodhi, Chirrut, and Baze decide to go rogue. They gather a small contingent of volunteers and steal an Imperial cargo shuttle, which Bodhi renames "Rogue One." Their mission: infiltrate the Imperial data archive on Scarif and transmit the plans to the Rebel fleet.

The team arrives on Scarif, a heavily fortified tropical planet protected by a planetary shield gate. Bodhi uses his Imperial clearance to bypass the shield and allow the Rogue One team to land. Jyn and Cassian, disguised in Imperial uniforms, infiltrate the archive tower, while Bodhi, Chirrut, Baze, and the other volunteers create a diversion on the ground. A fierce ground battle erupts between the Rebels and Imperial stormtroopers, attracting the attention of the Imperial fleet. The Rebel Alliance, realizing what is happening, dispatches its own fleet to Scarif, leading to a massive space battle above the planet.

Inside the archive, Jyn and Cassian navigate the vast data vault. K-2SO sacrifices himself to allow Jyn and Cassian to retrieve the data tape containing the Death Star plans. They fight their way to the main antenna tower, where Jyn must manually align the dish to transmit the data to the Rebel fleet. Bodhi manages to establish a connection to the Rebel fleet but is killed when a grenade detonates inside the shuttle. Chirrut and Baze provide cover for Jyn, making heroic last stands against overwhelming Imperial forces. Chirrut is killed activating the master switch for the transmission, and Baze falls shortly after, avenging his friend.

Above Scarif, Admiral Raddus, commanding the Rebel fleet, orders a Star Destroyer to ram the shield gate, creating a temporary breach. This allows the Death Star plans to be transmitted to the Rebel flagship. Director Krennic arrives on Scarif to personally stop Jyn, but he is shot by Cassian, who survived his earlier wounds. As the transmission completes, the Death Star, having arrived in orbit, fires a single reactor-destroying shot at the Scarif base, creating a massive explosion. Jyn and Cassian, having completed their mission, share a final embrace on the beach as the blast wave consumes them.

In the aftermath, the Rebel flagship, now in possession of the Death Star plans, attempts to jump to hyperspace but is intercepted by Darth Vader's Star Destroyer. Vader, in a terrifying display of his power, boards the Rebel ship, ruthlessly cutting down Rebel soldiers in his pursuit of the plans. A lone Rebel trooper manages to hand the data tape to Princess Leia Organa, who is aboard the Tantive IV, just before Vader breaches the door. Leia states that the plans are now part of a diplomatic mission, setting the stage directly for Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
