The film unfolds with the IRP party convening to elect their new Chief Minister. The unanimous choice falls upon Satyamoorthy, a respected and veteran leader. As he is being escorted to his vehicle, a party cadre publicly accuses him of sexual harassment, alleging he shared an inappropriate video via mobile phone. This accusation triggers a swift and severe backlash from the public, leading to Satyamoorthy and his entire family tragically taking their own lives. This devastating event, however, is not a spontaneous tragedy but a carefully orchestrated political maneuver orchestrated by R. K. Boopathi, a powerful minister within the same party.
Two days prior to the incident, Boopathi had approached Satyamoorthy, requesting him to step aside, citing his own twenty-year wait to assume the Chief Ministerial position. Satyamoorthy's refusal sets in motion Boopathi's Machiavellian scheme. Boopathi capitalizes on the public outrage following the accusation, manipulating the narrative and further demonizing Satyamoorthy. He even stages an emotional outburst at Satyamoorthy's funeral, leveraging the tragedy to gain public sympathy and political mileage. Subsequently, Boopathi contests and wins the MLA by-election in Satyamoorthy's constituency of Karaikudi, ultimately ascending to the Chief Ministership of Tamil Nadu.
Concurrently, near Chennai International Airport, Kamalakannan, a farmer and operator of a free meal service in his village near Karaikudi, is forcibly taken as a passenger by an auto driver named Rajini Appadurai. Rajini, observing Kamal's attire, mistakenly assumes him to be wealthy and intends to profit by driving him around the city. Unbeknownst to Rajini, Kamal's purpose in Chennai is far removed from leisure or spending. He has traveled to the capital to plead with politicians to halt a railway project that threatens to displace him from his ancestral land, the very foundation of his livelihood and his family's legacy of selfless service. Kamal's grandfather had been renowned for providing unlimited food to guests and passersby, a tradition of generosity that Kamal strives to uphold.
Kamal's stay in Chennai is at the residence of his paternal aunt, Dr. Rani. During his time there, a romantic relationship blossoms between Kamal and Rani's daughter, Sridevi. However, their budding love is cut short when Sridevi departs for a foreign tour. Rani, under circumstances not fully explained, demands that Kamal promise to leave Sridevi forever, a promise he reluctantly makes.
Seeking help, Kamal attempts to connect with Boopathi, who had visited his village during the by-election campaign and had made promises of assistance. It is during this interaction that Kamal uncovers the shocking truth: Boopathi is the mastermind behind the railway project, designed to benefit his mistress. Furthermore, Kamal learns that Boopathi had used his mistress to frame Satyamoorthy, ultimately driving him and his family to suicide. This revelation shatters Kamal's faith in the political system, exposing its corruption and ruthlessness.
Disillusioned but not defeated, Kamal undergoes a transformation. He evolves into a shrewd political analyst and campaign strategist. He uses his newfound understanding of the political landscape to manipulate events, starting by orchestrating the election of Ramani, a moneylender, as the Mayor of Chennai. He achieves this by skillfully managing her campaign and leveraging the weaknesses of her opponents. His success in this venture provides him with the connections and experience needed to further his political ambitions.
Kamal's next move is to align himself with Perumal, the leader of the opposition party. He joins the party and, using his strategic acumen, engineers Perumal's victory in the subsequent elections, leading to Perumal becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. With Perumal in power, Kamal's long-term plan begins to bear fruit. He uses his influence to expose Boopathi's crimes, revealing his role in Satyamoorthy's death and the subsequent cover-up. Boopathi is finally brought to justice, arrested for his involvement in the tragedy.
With Boopathi's downfall, Kamal's primary objective shifts back to his personal life. He utilizes his political connections and understanding of the system to successfully save his ancestral property from the railway project, securing his family's legacy. Finally, after overcoming the obstacles that separated them, Kamal and Sridevi are reunited, suggesting a happy resolution to their interrupted romance. The film concludes with Kamal's triumph over adversity, showcasing his transformation from a naive villager to a powerful political strategist who not only avenges injustice but also secures his own future and finds love.
