The film opens in 1980 with a group of friends celebrating their farewell party. They make a solemn promise to stay connected throughout their lives. Among them are Hanumanta Rao, who has a young son named Prabha, and Vishwanath, who has a daughter named Nandini. As life pulls them in different directions, Vishwanath and Nandini relocate to Switzerland to pursue professional opportunities, while Hanumanta Rao chooses to stay in India, establishing himself as a criminal lawyer. This separation marks the childhood end of Prabha and Nandini’s close bond.
Years pass, and the old friends decide to reunite. Prabha, now a grown man and a talented musician, is thrilled at the prospect of seeing Nandini again after so many years. However, his excitement is complicated by a situation involving Nisha, the daughter of a local don. Nisha is infatuated with Prabha, and when he rejects her advances, she attempts suicide. Her enraged father, seeking vengeance, tries to kill Prabha and his friends. Prabha, in a quick-thinking move, fabricates a story about a romantic trip to Switzerland with his band, where he supposedly fell in love with Nandini. This elaborate lie manages to save him and his friends from the don's wrath.
The reunion takes place at Bhadram’s farmhouse. Prabha’s heart leaps when he finally sees Nandini. She has blossomed into a beautiful and intelligent woman, a Cambridge graduate and gold medalist. Prabha tries various comedic antics to capture her attention and impress her, but his efforts are consistently thwarted by Nandini’s protective brother. One day, Prabha cleverly uses a piece of information about Nandini’s favorite sport, basketball, to engineer a situation where he and his friends build a basketball court. This creates an opportunity for them to interact. Rishi, Appala Raju’s son, arrives on the scene, cheered on by Nandini, and joins the basketball game. Rishi and Prabha become rivals, both vying for Nandini's attention, creating a palpable tension between them.
A subplot emerges when Bhadram’s daughter, Prasanna, confesses to Prabha that she is in love with a man she wishes to marry. However, her family demands a hefty dowry of 5 million rupees. Prasanna implores Prabha to talk to her father about arranging the marriage. Prabha, ever the helpful friend, approaches Bhadram, pretending to have found a suitable match for Prasanna. Bhadram, believing he must secure the dowry, decides to sell his house. Prasanna, heartbroken at the thought of her family’s sacrifice, tries to refuse the proposal. Hanumanta Rao, overhearing the conversation, inquires about the situation. Prabha explains the dowry issue, and Hanumanta Rao and his friends decide to contribute financially, preventing Bhadram from having to sell his home. This act of generosity and kindness touches Nandini, and she begins to develop feelings for Prabha.
Rishi, witnessing Nandini’s growing affection for Prabha, becomes jealous. His friends attempt to sabotage Prabha by tampering with an electrical connection. Unaware of their malicious intent, Hanumanta Rao accidentally touches a live wire and receives an electric shock. This incident leads to a heated confrontation between Prabha and Rishi, culminating in Hanumanta Rao, misunderstanding the situation, angrily kicking Prabha out of his house.
Prabha later discovers a significant secret: Rishi is not Appala Raju’s son, but rather Vishwanath’s nephew. The story unfolds that Vishwanath had defied his father’s wishes by marrying his girlfriend instead of the woman chosen for him. Hanumanta Rao had helped Vishwanath in this matter, leading to Vishwanath being disowned by his father. Hanumanta Rao, feeling responsible, attempts to reconcile Vishwanath with his father. After numerous efforts, Vishwanath's father agrees to forgive him, but on one condition: Nandini must marry his grandson (Rishi).
Prabha, deeply moved by his father’s commitment and promise, vows to sacrifice his love for Nandini to uphold his father's word. He decides to leave, concealing his true feelings. As he prepares to depart, Nandini finally reveals that she has been in love with him all along. She had been playing hard to get to gauge the depth of his love. Prabha, bound by his promise, cannot reciprocate her confession and leaves, leaving Nandini devastated.
Meanwhile, Nisha’s father discovers that Prabha’s story about Switzerland was a fabrication. He again seeks revenge, determined to kill Prabha. Nandini, learning the truth behind Prabha’s silence and angered by Hanumanta Rao’s role in the situation, deliberately injures herself. She then tells Vishwanath that she loves Prabha and intends to marry him. Vishwanath, witnessing his daughter’s genuine love and pain, agrees to her wish, despite the condition set by his father. Hanumanta Rao reminds him of the promise, but Vishwanath prioritizes his daughter’s happiness and their long-standing friendship, dismissing the condition. Even Vishwanath's father, witnessing the emotional turmoil, expresses regret for his past actions and apologizes to his son, finally accepting Nandini's choice.
Outside, Nandini rushes to Prabha’s aid, finding him being attacked by Nisha’s father. Prabha manages to defend himself and Nandini, sustaining injuries in the process. As Nisha’s father raises a gun to shoot Prabha, Nandini pleads with him to stop, expressing her unwavering love for Prabha. Moved by her heartfelt plea, Nisha’s father lowers his gun, finally accepting their love. Prabha and Nandini are finally united, their love overcoming all obstacles, and they embark on a happy married life.
