Summary:

Pat Solitano Jr. (Bradley Cooper), a man with bipolar disorder, is released from a state institution and moves back in with his parents. Determined to reconcile with his estranged wife, Nikki, Pat tries to maintain a positive outlook despite his volatile emotions and family dynamics. His efforts are complicated by his father's obsessive gambling and his own inability to manage his anger.

His world is further disrupted when he meets Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence), a young widow struggling with her own grief and mental health issues. Plot:

After eight months in a mental institution following an incident involving his wife and her lover, Pat Solitano Jr. returns home to live with his parents, Pat Sr. and Dolores. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Pat is fixated on winning back his wife, Nikki, who has a restraining order against him. He tries to live by a new mantra, finding the "silver linings" in every situation, despite not taking his prescribed medication and frequently clashing with his family, particularly his superstitious father.

Pat's attempts to reconnect with Nikki are hindered by her reluctance and his own unstable behavior. He soon encounters Tiffany Maxwell, his best friend's sister-in-law, who is also struggling with depression and the recent death of her husband. Tiffany offers to deliver a letter to Nikki on Pat's behalf, but only if he agrees to be her partner in a ballroom dance competition. As they train, their initially combative relationship evolves, revealing their shared vulnerabilities and a growing, undeniable connection.
