SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (2008)

He is just one question away from winning the grand prize when he is accused of cheating and arrested. During his interrogation, Jamal recounts his life story, revealing how his extraordinary and often traumatic experiences growing up in the slums, with his brother Salim and childhood friend Latika, coincidentally provided him with the answers to each question on the show.

The film weaves together flashbacks from Jamal's life, showing his resilience, his deep bond with his brother, and his enduring love for Latika, which ultimately drives his participation in the game show. It's a tale of destiny, love, and the incredible journey of a boy from the streets of Mumbai.

Plot:

The story opens with Jamal Malik being interrogated by the police, beaten and accused of fraud for knowing all the answers on "Kaun Banega Crorepati?" (the Indian "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"). He explains that he didn't cheat, but rather his life experiences coincidentally equipped him with the knowledge. Through a series of flashbacks, the audience is taken on a journey through Jamal's tumultuous childhood in the slums of Mumbai, alongside his older brother Salim and their orphaned friend Latika.

These flashbacks illustrate the harsh realities of their lives, including escaping religious riots, becoming street children, and engaging in petty crime to survive. Jamal's unwavering love for Latika becomes a central theme, as they are separated and reunited multiple times throughout their lives. His ultimate motivation for appearing on the game show is not wealth, but the hope that Latika, who watches the show, will see him and they can finally be together. Each question on the show triggers a memory that reveals how Jamal, through his struggles and adventures, came to know the correct answer, leading to a dramatic and heartfelt climax on the final question.
