SPY (2015)

Summary:

Susan Cooper, an intelligent but modest CIA analyst, spends her days behind a desk, acting as the eyes and ears for her suave field agent partner, Bradley Fine. When Fine is seemingly assassinated by a ruthless arms dealer, Rayna Boyanov, and other top agents are compromised, Susan volunteers to go undercover. Despite her lack of field experience and the agency's initial skepticism, Susan is thrust into the dangerous world of international espionage, armed with unglamorous identities and a mission to locate a stolen nuclear weapon.

Navigating treacherous situations, Susan must contend with a hot-headed, self-proclaimed super-spy named Rick Ford, a charming but duplicitous Italian contact, and the sophisticated villainess, Rayna. Plot:

The film introduces Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy), a brilliant but unassuming CIA analyst who spends her days in the agency's rodent-infested basement, expertly guiding her dashing field agent partner, Bradley Fine (Jude Law), through dangerous missions using an earpiece and advanced surveillance technology. Susan adores Fine, who is charming but oblivious to her deeper feelings. Their latest mission involves tracking a nuclear weapon in Varna, Bulgaria. Fine successfully infiltrates a mansion, but when he attempts to retrieve the device's location from arms dealer Tihomir Boyanov, he is suddenly shot in the head by Boyanov's ruthless daughter, Rayna (Rose Byrne), who claims to know the identities of all top CIA agents, rendering them useless for the mission.

Devastated by Fine's apparent death, Susan is called into a meeting by her superior, Elaine Crocker (Allison Janney). With Fine dead and agents Rick Ford (Jason Statham) and Karen Walker (Morena Baccarin) compromised due to Rayna's intel, the CIA needs an agent who is unknown to the enemy. Susan, despite her desk-bound history and lack of field experience, volunteers. Crocker reluctantly agrees, assigning her an identity as a frumpy, middle-aged tourist, complete with a fanny pack and cat-themed clothing, much to Susan's dismay. Before she departs, the arrogant and reckless agent Rick Ford dramatically resigns in protest, convinced that Susan will fail and he is the only one capable of handling the mission, constantly popping up throughout the film with exaggerated tales of his own heroism and dismissive warnings.

Susan’s first assignment is to go to Paris and observe Sergio De Luca (Bobby Cannavale), an associate of Rayna Boyanov, who is believed to be brokering the sale of the nuclear device. While tailing De Luca, Susan unexpectedly encounters Karen, who is also secretly tracking De Luca. Karen is shot by an assassin, but Susan intervenes, saving Karen’s life and killing the assailant in a surprisingly brutal fashion, proving she has a hidden knack for combat. This incident leads Susan to switch her original, unglamorous identity for a more sophisticated one, much to the chagrin of her handler, Nancy B. Artingstall (Miranda Hart), who is also Susan's best friend and provides remote support.

Susan follows De Luca to Rome, where she meets Aldo (Peter Serafinowicz), a comically lecherous Italian contact who constantly flirts with her. At a casino, Susan spots Rayna Boyanov. She manages to infiltrate Rayna's inner circle by staging a confrontation with her, impressing Rayna with her quick wit and unexpected toughness. Rayna, believing Susan is a bodyguard hired by De Luca, invites her to travel with her to Budapest. During their flight, Susan discovers a bomb planted on Rayna’s plane. She narrowly disarms it with Nancy's remote guidance, saving Rayna and solidifying her position as Rayna's trusted confidante.

In Budapest, Susan continues to gather intelligence, all while fending off Ford, who keeps appearing and botching her operations with his misguided attempts to "help." Susan learns that Rayna is planning to sell the nuclear device to a wealthy, sadistic arms dealer named Lia (Nargis Fakhri). During a tense meeting, Susan is shocked to discover that Bradley Fine is alive and well, working alongside De Luca and seemingly in league with the villains. Fine explains that he faked his death to infiltrate Rayna's organization, a revelation that deeply wounds Susan, as she had grieved for him and risked her life in his place.

The situation escalates during a high-stakes party. Susan confronts Fine, who reveals that he is still loyal to the CIA and working to expose De Luca. However, De Luca captures Fine and Rayna, planning to sell the nuclear bomb to another buyer: Tihomir Boyanov (Zach Woods), Rayna's father, who was thought to be dead. It becomes clear that Tihomir is the true mastermind, orchestrating the entire plot to acquire the nuclear device and launch it. Susan, with Nancy's help, orchestrates a daring rescue, leading to a chaotic chase through the streets of Budapest involving cars, motorcycles, and a helicopter.

During the climax, Susan confronts Tihomir and De Luca. She engages in a brutal hand-to-hand fight with De Luca, utilizing her newfound combat skills and improvisation. Fine, now free, assists her, and even Rick Ford, despite his bluster, manages to contribute in his own clumsy way. Susan ultimately defeats De Luca and Tihomir Boyanov, preventing the sale and detonation of the nuclear device. Rayna, initially furious, finds herself strangely appreciative of Susan's competence and even offers her a job, which Susan politely declines.

In the aftermath, the CIA recognizes Susan's extraordinary talent and bravery. She is no longer confined to her desk job but is offered a permanent position as a field agent. The film concludes with Susan, now a confident and respected agent, embarking on a new mission with Fine, who attempts to kiss her, only for her to playfully reject him. Rick Ford, still convinced of his own superiority, accidentally falls out of a helicopter, leaving Susan to enjoy her well-deserved success and the respect of her peers, including a surprising friendship with Rayna, who calls her for advice. Susan Cooper has transformed from an overlooked analyst into the CIA's most unlikely, yet most effective, secret weapon.
