In the bustling city of Baltimore, Maryland, Andie West is fervently chasing her dream of becoming a street dancer, yet she grapples with a sense of not belonging anywhere. Recently bereaved by her mother's battle with cancer, Andie now resides with Sarah, her mother's best friend and guardian. Struggling academically, she finds solace and purpose in her passion for dancing, regularly rehearsing with her crew, the 410, to maintain their top-ranking status in the underground competition known as "The Streets."
Encouraged by her friend and older brother figure, Tyler Gage, Andie decides to audition for the prestigious Maryland School of the Arts. Tyler, having experienced a positive life transformation there himself, hopes the same for Andie. Despite her initial misgivings, Andie auditions successfully, thanks to the intervention of Chase Collins, who persuades his brother, Blake, the school's director, to admit her. Learning about Andie's academic pursuits, the 410 reacts with anger and expels her from their crew.
Undeterred, Andie and Chase assemble a new crew, recruiting individuals who have faced rejection for being true to themselves. The crew, including Smiles, Hair, Monster, Fly, Cable, Jenny Kido, and Moose, secretly practices their routines late at night using a key Chase possesses. Missy, Andie's friend, joins the crew after leaving the 410 in solidarity with Andie. To enter "The Streets," the crew must first execute a prank and share it online. Seeking revenge for a past humiliation, Chase targets Tuck, the leader of the 410, leaving a dead fish in his home's vent.
The 410 retaliates, warning Andie's crew to stay away from "The Streets" or face consequences. Tuck assaults Chase for his prank, leaving him battered and bruised. Simultaneously, the 410 vandalizes the dance studio. Director Collins, preoccupied with an upcoming MSA fundraiser, expels Andie for her involvement with the underground competition. Andie, in a selfless act, claims sole responsibility to protect her teammates. Despite Chase's attempt to defend her, Director Collins remains adamant.
Upon hearing of Andie's expulsion, her guardian contemplates sending her to live with her aunt in Texas. However, learning of Andie's sacrifice to protect her crew, she reconsiders and allows Andie to participate in "The Streets." The same night as the MSA fundraiser, Andie and her crew receive a text about the competition. They decide to forgo the fundraiser and compete in "The Streets" instead. Learning of Andie's courage, her guardian is proud and supports her decision.
Director Collins, in search of his students, ends up at "The Streets." Witnessing the crew's performance, he realizes that street dancing is a legitimate form of artistic expression. He embraces Andie back into MSA. With her crew by her side, Andie's education is secured, and the film concludes on an optimistic note, highlighting the power of friendship and perseverance.
