A team of international astronauts are sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun with a nuclear fission bomb in 2057.

SUNSHINE (2007)

Summary:

In the year 2057, the sun is dying, plunging Earth into an ice age. Humanity's last hope rests with the crew of the Icarus II, an international team of eight astronauts on a perilous mission to deliver a massive stellar bomb into the sun's core, hoping to reignite it and save mankind. As they approach their destination, the crew encounters the derelict Icarus I, the original mission that disappeared seven years prior, leading to a series of catastrophic events that threaten to derail their vital mission and their very lives.

The film explores themes of survival, sacrifice, faith, and the psychological toll of extreme isolation and the immense responsibility placed upon a handful of individuals. It's a visually stunning and thought-provoking journey into the void, where the line between salvation and madness blurs under the intense gaze of a dying star.

Plot:

Fifty years in the future, Earth is facing an extinction-level event as the sun slowly fades. The spaceship Icarus II is on a desperate mission to restart the sun with a massive nuclear payload. Led by Captain Kaneda and guided by physicist Capa, the crew of eight makes their way towards the sun. During their journey, they receive a distress signal from the Icarus I, the previous mission that vanished without a trace seven years earlier. Against the advice of some crew members, the mission commander, Harvey, and psychologist Searle decide to alter course to investigate, believing a second bomb could be crucial for success.

This decision sets off a chain of catastrophic events. A navigation error during the approach to Icarus I damages their ship's heat shield and solar panels, forcing a dangerous spacewalk and leading to the tragic loss of critical crew members. Upon boarding the Icarus I, they discover its crew met a grisly end, and the sole survivor, Pinbacker, has become a deranged religious fanatic determined to sabotage the Icarus II's mission, believing humanity's extinction is divine will. The remaining Icarus II crew must not only contend with Pinbacker's relentless attacks but also face internal conflicts, dwindling resources, and the immense psychological pressure of their impossible task, all while hurtling towards the heart of the sun.
