Plot:

The story of Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari transports the audience back to the year 1995, capturing a simpler era defined by local temples, pager devices, rewindable cassette tapes, and the looming influence of landmark romantic cinema like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. In this bustling city, we are introduced to Suraj Singh Dhillon, a boisterous, well-meaning, and affluent Punjabi bachelor who successfully manages his father’s established dairy business, Jai Mata Rani Doodh Bhandar. Despite his financial stability and inherently decent nature, Suraj is plagued by a series of rejections in the arranged marriage market, largely due to his raw, unrefined mannerisms and a lack of traditional sophistication. Desperate to settle down and find a suitable partner, Suraj seeks advice from his cinematic-obsessed best friend, Sukhi, who is convinced that modern girls are tired of "good boys" and instead crave the rebellious allure of a "bad boy" archetype popular in the films of that decade. Taking this advice to heart, Suraj attempts to manufacture a cool, edgy persona, which leads him to deliberately break a traffic signal, consume beer in public, and loiter outside a local girls' college.

Unbeknownst to Suraj, his staged rebellion is caught on camera by Madhu Mangal Rane, a highly fastidious and brilliant wedding detective who operates in a variety of elaborate, untraceable disguises to root out corrupt, deceitful, or unsuitable suitors. Madhu is a self-righteous defender of innocent brides, believing his profession is a sacred duty to prevent young women from entering disastrous marriages. Having snapped photographs of Suraj's seemingly rowdy "bad boy" behavior, Madhu compiles a devastating background report and delivers it directly to the family of Suraj's prospective bride. The marriage proposal is instantly canceled, leaving the Dhillon household in a state of absolute shock and public humiliation. When a dejected Suraj forces the local matchmaker to reveal the identity of the person who ruined his prospects, he learns about the existence of the elusive wedding detective, Madhu Mangal Rane, and vows to seek a fitting revenge that will destroy the detective's flawless record.

Suraj's plan of retaliation begins with a stakeout of Madhu's daily life, which leads him to discover that the detective has a beautiful, highly traditional younger sister named Tulshi.
