In 1992, Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier, from opposite sides of the tracks in Oriental, North Carolina, fall deeply in love. Dawson comes from an abusive, notorious criminal family, while Amanda is from a wealthy, respected household. Despite their differences, their bond is strong, fostered by Dawson's kindhearted mentor, Tuck Hostetler. A tragic incident involving Dawson's father and a local doctor leads to Dawson's incarceration. Believing he is not good enough for Amanda and wanting her to pursue a better life, Dawson pushes her away, telling her not to visit him.

Twenty-one years later, in 2014, Amanda is unhappily married with a son, while Dawson works on an oil rig, still single. They are both called back to Oriental for Tuck's funeral.
