The story begins with two ancient spirits, La Muerte, ruler of the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, making a wager on which of two childhood friends, Manolo or Joaquín, will win the heart of their mutual friend, Maria. Xibalba, known for his trickery, cheats by giving Joaquín an enchanted medal, leading Maria to choose Joaquín.
