Summary:

A young American woman, Greta Evans, takes a job as a nanny in a remote English village, only to discover that the 8-year-old boy she is hired to care for is actually a life-sized porcelain doll named Brahms. The eccentric elderly couple, the Heelshires, treat the doll as their deceased son, enforcing a strict set of rules for Greta to follow.

Initially dismissing their behavior as a coping mechanism for grief, Greta soon begins to experience unsettling and inexplicable occurrences in the house. As she struggles to comprehend the supernatural events, she starts to suspect that there might be something sinister and very much alive about the doll, or perhaps the house itself.

Plot:

Greta Evans flees a troubled past in the United States to work as a nanny for the Heelshires, an elderly couple living in a grand, isolated mansion in the English countryside. Upon her arrival, she is introduced to Brahms, their "son," who is revealed to be a porcelain doll. The Heelshires treat the doll as if it were a real boy, giving Greta a list of strict rules for his care before they depart for a much-needed vacation, leaving Greta alone with the doll and the weekly grocery deliveryman, Malcolm.

Initially, Greta ignores the rules, treating Brahms as merely a doll. However, strange things begin to happen: Brahms's blanket disappears, she hears crying, and her belongings are moved. Malcolm, who visits regularly, dismisses her concerns, suggesting she's imagining things due to the isolation. As the occurrences escalate, including a terrifying incident where she's locked in the attic, Greta begins to believe that Brahms might be alive and capable of moving on his own. She starts to follow the rules, hoping to appease the doll and ensure her safety, forming an unusual bond with it.

As the Heelshires' return date approaches, Greta's ex-boyfriend Cole tracks her down and arrives at the mansion, disrupting her fragile peace. He dismisses her belief in Brahms and attempts to destroy the doll, revealing a hidden room behind a mirror. Inside, they discover the truth: the real Brahms, who was thought to have died in a fire 20 years prior, has been living in the walls of the house, watching and manipulating events through the doll. The adult Brahms, a disfigured and disturbed man, emerges, intent on making Greta his "mother" forever. A terrifying struggle ensues as Greta and Malcolm fight for their lives against the monstrous Brahms.
