Plot:

Gary Grobowski, a tour bus operator, and Brooke Meyers, an art gallery manager, are a seemingly happy couple until a trivial argument after a family dinner spirals out of control. Brooke feels Gary doesn't appreciate her and is unromantic, while Gary believes Brooke is overly critical and demanding. In a fit of frustration, Brooke declares she wants to break up, expecting Gary to fight for her, but he agrees, thinking she's bluffing.

The central conflict arises when neither Gary nor Brooke is willing to move out of their shared condominium. This leads to a prolonged and increasingly bizarre living situation where they employ various tactics to make the other's life miserable. Gary brings strippers to the condo and leaves his belongings everywhere, while Brooke throws a party without inviting him and redecorates their shared space to spite him.
