THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (2012)

Five college friends — Dana, Curt, Jules, Marty, and Holden — embark on a weekend getaway to a remote cabin in the woods. Plot:

College students Dana, Curt, Jules, Marty, and Holden drive to a secluded cabin for a weekend retreat. Upon arrival, they lose cell phone reception and discover a mysterious cellar. Jules reads from an old diary, inadvertently summoning a family of zombie-like torturers. As the group is systematically attacked, they attempt to escape, only to find their paths blocked by an invisible force field and a collapsing tunnel.

Meanwhile, the film frequently cuts to an elaborate underground facility where technicians Richard Sitterson and Steve Hadley, along with their team, are manipulating the cabin's environment, controlling the creatures, and influencing the students' choices through pheromones and gas. It is revealed that the facility is part of an ancient, global organization tasked with performing annual ritualistic sacrifices of specific archetypes (the Whore, the Athlete, the Scholar, the Fool, and the Virgin) to appease "Ancient Ones" and prevent the end of the world. Marty, the "Fool," is the first to deduce that something is amiss due to his drug use making him immune to some of the facility's influences. He eventually uncovers a hidden elevator leading to the facility.

Marty, with Dana's help, navigates the facility, releasing all the monsters held captive within its cells. Chaos erupts as the creatures turn on the staff. Dana and Marty confront the Director, who explains the necessity of the ritual and implores them to complete their sacrifice. They refuse, choosing instead to let humanity face the consequences. The film concludes with the "Ancient Ones" awakening and a giant hand erupting from the ground, signaling the destruction of the world.
