Plot:

Myrtle "Tilly" Dunnage returns to her desolate hometown of Dungatar, a place she was sent away from as a child after being accused of murdering a schoolmate, Stewart Pettigrew. She finds her eccentric, ailing mother, Molly, living in squalor and barely recognizing her. Tilly, now a sophisticated Parisian couturier, is determined to unravel the mystery of her past and confront the prejudiced townsfolk who shunned her.

Using her extraordinary talent for dressmaking, Tilly begins to transform the dowdy women of Dungatar, creating stunning gowns that ignite their confidence and reveal their hidden desires. Her captivating presence and exquisite designs slowly win over some of the town, including the charming Teddy McSwiney, who falls deeply in love with her, and the cross-dressing Sergeant Farrat. As Tilly's influence grows, she digs deeper into her memories, piecing together the fragmented events of Stewart's death, which she cannot fully recall.

The truth about Stewart's death is eventually revealed, exonerating Tilly but exposing the hypocrisy and cruelty of many townspeople. After a series of dramatic events, including a tragic accident involving Teddy and a vengeful act by the town, Tilly decides to leave Dungatar for good. In a spectacular act of revenge, she sets fire to the entire town after ensuring all the inhabitants are at a sports carnival, leaving it to burn to the ground as she departs on a train, wearing her finest red gown and holding her beloved sewing machine.
