The Expendables, a team of grizzled mercenaries, are deployed to Nepal to rescue a kidnapped Chinese businessman. The team, led by the stoic Barney Ross, includes Lee Christmas, a master swordsman; Yin Yang, a martial arts expert; Hale Caesar, the team's weapons specialist; Toll Road, the demolitions expert; the volatile Gunner Jensen; and Billy "The Kid," the youngest and newest member.
The mission is a success. They rescue the businessman and, unexpectedly, Trent Mauser, a rival mercenary who had been imprisoned alongside him. Yang, tasked with escorting the businessman back to China, departs from the team.
Back in New Orleans, Billy informs Barney of his intention to retire, eager to settle down with his girlfriend, Sophia. Barney, though reluctant to see his youngest member leave, respects his decision.
Soon after, a new mission arrives, courtesy of CIA operative Mr. Church. The objective: retrieve a mysterious object from a downed aircraft in Albania. Church sends Maggie Chan, a tech expert, to assist the team.
The mission in Albania goes awry. The Expendables recover the object, but they are ambushed by Jean Vilain, a ruthless international arms dealer, his ruthless second-in-command, Hector, and his formidable mercenary group, the Sangs. Vilain, having captured Billy, demands the object in exchange for his life.
The Expendables, faced with no other choice, surrender the object. However, Vilain, a man of his word in name only, brutally murders Billy, plunging a knife through his heart. Before he can escape, Barney recovers a note for Sophia from Billy's lifeless body.
The team, devastated by the loss of their comrade, buries Billy with military honors, vowing vengeance on Vilain. Maggie reveals that the retrieved object is a computer containing the location of five tons of refined weapons-grade plutonium, hidden in a long-abandoned Soviet mine. Vilain, intending to sell the plutonium on the black market, now poses a grave threat to global security.
The Expendables, using the computer's signal, track Vilain to Bulgaria. They establish a temporary base in an abandoned Russian military base. However, the next morning, they are ambushed by the Sangs and a heavily armed tank. Outgunned and seemingly outmatched, they are saved by the timely intervention of Booker, an old friend of Barney's, who swiftly eliminates both the Sangs and the tank.
Before departing, Booker informs the team of a nearby village whose inhabitants are resisting Vilain's oppressive rule. The Expendables, seeking information and potential allies, travel to the village.
They find a community of strong women, armed and determined, protecting their children from Vilain's forces. The men of the village have been forcibly conscripted to work as slaves in the mine, never to return. The women, desperate, plead for the Expendables' help.
The Sangs return to the village, seeking more captives. The Expendables, emboldened by the villagers' courage, ambush the Sangs, inflicting heavy casualties.
Having located Vilain's mine, the Expendables devise a daring plan. They assault the mine with their plane, creating a diversion. In the ensuing chaos, they rescue the enslaved miners from imminent execution.
However, Vilain and Hector, anticipating a counter-attack, have booby-trapped the mine. As the Expendables escape, Vilain remotely detonates the explosives, causing a massive cave-in. The mine collapses, trapping both the miners and the Expendables inside.
Just when all hope seems lost, Mr. Church and Trent Mauser arrive, having tracked the Expendables' signal. They quickly free the miners and the team from the rubble.
With the stakes higher than ever, Church joins the Expendables in their pursuit of Vilain. They intercept Vilain and his men at an airport as he attempts to flee the country. Booker, having received word of their predicament, arrives to lend his support.
A fierce battle ensues. Christmas, with a swift and deadly move, decapitates Hector. Barney and Vilain engage in a brutal hand-to-hand combat, a clash of titans. In a final confrontation, Barney gains the upper hand, defeating Vilain and delivering a fatal blow.
In the aftermath, Church, as a gesture of appreciation, gifts Barney an old Antonov An-2 biplane, a symbol of freedom and resilience. Church, Maggie, Booker, and Trent, having fulfilled their roles, depart from the team.
Back in France, Sophia discovers a box on her doorstep. Inside, she finds a significant sum of money and Billy's heartfelt letter, a poignant reminder of his love for her.
As the Expendables take to the skies in their new aircraft, they raise a final toast to their fallen comrade, Billy "The Kid," a hero who will never be forgotten.
