Plot:

Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16-year-old battling stage IV thyroid cancer, is reluctantly persuaded by her parents to attend a cancer support group. There, she encounters Augustus "Gus" Waters, an 18-year-old former basketball player who lost a leg to osteosarcoma. Gus is immediately drawn to Hazel's sharp wit and unique perspective, and they quickly bond over their shared experiences and a mutual appreciation for dark humor. Gus invites Hazel to his house, where they discuss their favorite books. Hazel recommends "An Imperial Affliction," a novel about a cancer-stricken girl that deeply resonates with her, while Gus suggests his own favorite, a series of fantasy novels.

Hazel and Gus's relationship deepens as they share intimate moments and support each other through their health challenges. Gus manages to contact Peter Van Houten, the reclusive and eccentric author of "An Imperial Affliction," who lives in Amsterdam. After some initial reluctance and a medical setback for Hazel, Gus uses a "wish" granted to him by a cancer charity to take Hazel and her mother on a trip to Amsterdam to meet Van Houten. The meeting, however, turns out to be a profound disappointment, as Van Houten is revealed to be a bitter alcoholic who offers no satisfactory answers about the book's ambiguous ending.

Despite the author's cruelty, Hazel and Gus find solace in each other, confessing their love and sharing an intimate moment. Shortly after their return to Indianapolis, Gus's cancer aggressively returns, spreading throughout his body. His condition rapidly deteriorates, leading to his hospitalization. Before his death, Gus arranges a "pre-funeral" for himself, where Hazel and their mutual friend Isaac deliver heartfelt eulogies. Gus passes away a few days later. At his funeral, Hazel is surprised to see Van Houten, who reveals that Gus had asked him to write a eulogy for Hazel. Hazel later discovers a letter from Gus, written before his death, expressing his profound love for her and his acceptance of their unique love story, concluding that "some infinities are bigger than other infinities."
