Plot:

Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist for the Swedish magazine Millennium, loses a libel case and faces public humiliation. He is then approached by Henrik Vanger, a retired industrialist, who offers him a lucrative job: to write Vanger's biography while secretly investigating the unsolved disappearance and presumed murder of Vanger's great-niece, Harriet, who vanished from Hedeby Island 40 years prior. Vanger believes a member of his own dysfunctional and often sinister family is responsible.

Blomkvist moves to Hedeby Island and begins his investigation, sifting through old photographs, diaries, and police reports. He soon realizes the complexity of the Vanger family's past, which includes Nazi sympathies and a history of violence. Meanwhile, Lisbeth Salander, a highly intelligent but deeply traumatized and unconventional hacker working for a security firm, is hired by Vanger's lawyer to conduct a background check on Blomkvist. Intrigued by Blomkvist's unusual assignment, Salander begins to secretly follow his progress.
