In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world.

THE GIVER (2014)

Summary:

In a seemingly utopian, yet dystopian, society where emotions, memories, and individuality have been eradicated, a young boy named Jonas is chosen to be the next Receiver of Memory. This unique role requires him to inherit all the memories of humanity's past, both good and bad, from the current Receiver, known as The Giver.

As Jonas receives these vivid memories, he begins to understand the true complexities of life, love, joy, and pain, as well as the dark history that led his community to embrace "Sameness." His newfound knowledge and emotional awakening drive him to question the very foundations of his society and ultimately embark on a perilous journey to restore memories to his people.

Plot:

Jonas lives in a community that has eliminated pain, war, and suffering by enforcing "Sameness," which also removes color, music, and strong emotions. At the annual Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas is unexpectedly selected as the new Receiver of Memory, a highly esteemed and solitary role. He begins training with the current Receiver, a wise old man who instructs Jonas on how to receive the memories of the past, which are preserved to guide the community's Elders in decision-making and prevent past mistakes.

As Jonas experiences memories of joy, love, pain, and war, he develops a profound emotional connection to humanity's past and begins to see the flaws in his own emotionless society. He forms a strong bond with a baby named Gabriel, who is struggling to thrive, and learns about the tragic fate of the previous Receiver-in-training, Rosemary. Driven by a desire to bring true feelings and color back to his world, Jonas conspires with The Giver to escape to "Elsewhere," believing that crossing a specific boundary will release all the stored memories back to the community.
