Summary:

Plot:

The film opens with a series of mysterious incidents in Central Park, New York City, where people suddenly become disoriented and commit suicide en masse. The phenomenon quickly spreads, causing similar incidents across the Northeastern United States. Initially believed to be a bioterrorist attack, the events are soon revealed to be something far more inexplicable and widespread. Philadelphia high school science teacher Elliot Moore, his estranged wife Alma, and his colleague Julian, along with Julian's daughter Jess, attempt to evacuate the city.

As they flee, they learn that the "attacks" are occurring in waves, triggered by an airborne neurotoxin that causes people to lose their inhibitions and self-preservation instincts. A prevailing theory emerges that plants are releasing this toxin as a defense mechanism against humanity, perceiving humans as a threat. Julian eventually separates from the group to search for his wife, leaving Jess with Elliot and Alma. Elliot, Alma, and Jess join a group of survivors attempting to find safety in rural areas, where the toxin is believed to be less concentrated.

Their journey is fraught with danger and paranoia as they encounter other survivors, some hostile, and witness the devastating effects of the phenomenon firsthand. After taking refuge with an eccentric and isolated woman named Mrs. Jones, they face a harrowing encounter with the toxin. Ultimately, Elliot and Alma reconcile and decide to face the danger together. The "attacks" suddenly cease as mysteriously as they began, with news reports speculating that the event was a "warning shot" from nature. The film concludes with Elliot and Alma seemingly safe, but a final scene in France suggests the phenomenon may not be over.
