The Purge is a 2013 American dystopian horror thriller film written and directed by James DeMonaco. Plot:
In the year 2022, the United States has been transformed into a seemingly peaceful society with almost zero crime and unemployment. This is made possible by an annual government-sanctioned event known as “The Purge,” during which all crime — including murder — is legal for 12 hours. Emergency services are suspended, allowing citizens to release their violence without consequence.
James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) is a successful security systems salesman who profits from selling high-end protection equipment to wealthy families during Purge night. He lives with his wife Mary (Lena Headey) and their two children, teenager Zoey and young son Charlie, in a fortified suburban home.
As the Purge begins at 7 PM, the family activates their security system, locking themselves inside for the night. Everything appears safe — until Charlie sees a wounded man on the security cameras, desperately seeking shelter. Feeling compassion, Charlie secretly disables the system and allows the man inside.
Soon after, a group of masked, wealthy young people arrive at the Sandin home. They reveal that the injured man is the one they are hunting and demand that he be handed over. They warn that if the family refuses, they will break in and kill everyone inside.
James refuses to surrender the man, believing in protecting innocent life. The family is soon forced into a violent standoff as the attackers breach their defenses. Inside the house, fear and tension spiral out of control. The hidden truths about each family member surface, including Zoey’s resentment toward her father and secrets involving her boyfriend.
As the night progresses, the killing becomes more personal and brutal. James is eventually killed while protecting his family. In a shocking twist, the masked attackers are defeated — only for the family’s wealthy neighbors to reveal themselves as true enemies. They enter the house intending to kill the Sandins out of resentment and jealousy.
In the final moments before the Purge ends, the neighbors stop themselves, spared only by the return of law and order. At sunrise, the surviving Sandin family is left shattered but alive, realizing that the true horror came not only from strangers, but from the people they trusted.
