Summary:

Plot:
The story is set in a devastated, ash-covered world where civilization has collapsed and most life has been wiped out. A man and his young son travel south on foot along abandoned roads, pushing a shopping cart filled with their few remaining possessions. With food scarce and danger everywhere, survival becomes their only goal.
The man, a protective and cautious father, teaches his son how to stay alive in a world filled with starvation, violence, and roaming bands of cannibals. He constantly reminds the boy that they are “the good guys,” holding on to moral values even when surrounded by cruelty and death. The boy, more compassionate and hopeful than his father, struggles to understand the harsh choices they must make to survive.
As they journey through ruined towns, burned forests, and abandoned houses, they encounter the remnants of humanity — some desperate and harmless, others brutal and predatory. Each encounter forces the father to choose between mercy and survival. Flashbacks reveal memories of the world before the collapse and the boy’s mother, who lost hope and chose death over enduring the new reality.
Despite illness, hunger, and constant fear, the father remains determined to protect his son at all costs. The road becomes a symbol of both physical survival and moral endurance. The boy’s belief in kindness and helping others slowly challenges his father’s hardened outlook.
In the final part of the journey, the father’s health deteriorates rapidly. After ensuring his son knows how to survive on his own, he succumbs to his illness. The boy is left alone but soon encounters another family who shares the same values of goodness and survival. Choosing hope over fear, the boy joins them, carrying forward the moral lessons his father taught him.
The Road concludes as a quiet yet powerful meditation on love, responsibility, and the fragile persistence of humanity even at the end of the world.
