Plot:

The film opens in a vibrant New York City apartment building, introducing Max, a cheerful and devoted Jack Russell Terrier who adores his owner, Katie. Max's daily routine revolves around eagerly awaiting Katie's return from work, sharing playful moments, and enjoying the company of his fellow pet residents: Chloe, an apathetic but lovable tabby cat; Mel, an excitable pug; Buddy, a laid-back dachshund; and Sweetpea, a parakeet. Max believes he has the perfect life, content with his status as Katie's sole furry companion. However, his world is dramatically shaken when Katie brings home Duke, a gigantic, shaggy Newfoundland mix from the animal shelter, explaining that he needs a home. Max is instantly resentful of Duke's size, clumsiness, and the attention he demands from Katie, viewing him as an unwelcome intruder.

Max and Duke's rivalry quickly escalates. Max attempts to assert dominance by marking territory and generally making Duke's life miserable. Duke, feeling unwanted and threatened by Max's established position, retaliates by deliberately causing chaos, such as destroying furniture. Their animosity reaches a peak during a walk in the park. Max tries to ditch Duke by dragging him into an alley, but their squabble inadvertently leads them to a group of stray cats who steal their collars. Without their collars, Max and Duke are spotted by Animal Control and captured, destined for the pound. In a stroke of unfortunate luck, their cage is then hijacked by a cunning, psychopathic white bunny named Snowball, who is the leader of the "Flushed Pets" – a secret society of abandoned and neglected animals living in the sewers, plotting revenge against humans and their pampered pets.

Snowball, mistaking Max and Duke for fellow strays who have suffered at the hands of humans, invites them to join his gang. To avoid being eaten by a one-eyed viper named Tiberius, Max and Duke pretend to despise humans. Snowball tests their loyalty by asking them to prove they "killed" their owners. When a mangy cat named Ozone, who had stolen their collars, appears, Max and Duke are forced to throw him off a ledge to maintain their cover, accidentally killing the viper in the process when it tries to attack Ozone. This act of "bravery" earns them Snowball's trust, and they are initiated into the Flushed Pets. They learn of Snowball's plan to lead his army to the surface and unleash chaos upon humanity. However, their true identities are exposed when a small, elderly dog named Pops, who had been interrogating Ozone, reveals that Max and Duke are domesticated pets.

Back in Max's apartment building, Gidget, a fluffy white Pomeranian who is secretly head-over-heels in love with Max, realizes he is missing. Alarmed, she enlists the help of Chloe, Mel, Buddy, and Sweetpea to find him. They visit Pops, a wise, wheelchair-bound Basset Hound with extensive knowledge of the city's animal underworld, who agrees to help them. Pops leads the group on a perilous journey through the city, encountering various animals and obstacles. They eventually cross paths with Tiberius, a red-tailed hawk who initially tries to eat Sweetpea, but Gidget convinces him to help them find Max and Duke by offering him a pet store full of birds. Tiberius, swayed by Gidget's determination, reluctantly agrees and uses his aerial view to track the Flushed Pets.

Meanwhile, Max and Duke escape Snowball's lair and stumble into a sausage factory, where they gorge themselves. Duke, remembering his previous owner, Fred, tells Max about how he was abandoned after Fred's family decided they couldn't keep him. He expresses his fear of being unwanted again. Max, touched by Duke's story, promises to help him find Fred. They locate Fred's old house, only to discover it's been sold to a new family. Heartbroken, Duke believes Max intentionally led him there to upset him, reigniting their animosity. Their argument attracts the attention of the new homeowners, who call Animal Control, resulting in Duke's recapture.

Max tries to save Duke but is cornered by Snowball and the Flushed Pets, who are still furious about the deception. However, Max is saved by Gidget and her rescue team, who arrive just in time. Gidget, with her surprisingly fierce fighting skills, fends off Snowball's gang. Max, realizing the extent of Gidget's loyalty, apologizes for taking her for granted. He then devises a plan to rescue Duke from the Animal Control van. Snowball, witnessing Max's determination to save his friend, has a change of heart and decides to help them, realizing that not all humans are bad and some pets truly care for each other. The Flushed Pets, initially hesitant, are swayed by Snowball's newfound compassion.

A chaotic chase ensues across the Brooklyn Bridge. Snowball and his gang create a diversion, allowing Max and Gidget to board the Animal Control van. During the escape, the van crashes, and Duke is freed. However, the van, now dangling precariously, is about to fall into the river with Duke still inside. Max risks his own life to save Duke, but as they climb out, they are separated by the collapsing bridge. Just as it seems all hope is lost, Snowball, with the help of the Flushed Pets, commandeers a city bus, using it to pull the van back to safety. The pets all make it off the bridge just as it gives way completely.

As the sun rises, Max and Duke are reunited with Katie, who is overjoyed to find them both. Snowball, having had a change of heart, is eventually adopted by a little girl who sees him as a cute, fluffy bunny rather than a revolutionary leader. The film concludes with Max and Duke, now firm friends, happily living together in Katie's apartment, their bond strengthened by their shared adventure. They, along with their friends, continue to enjoy their secret lives, forever changed by the experiences that taught them about friendship, loyalty, and the true meaning of home.
