THE THINNING (2016)

Summary:

In a dystopian future where Earth is ravaged by overpopulation, the United Nations institutes a population control measure known as "The Thinning." This annual aptitude test determines who lives and who dies, with those who fail being "thinned." The film follows two students, Blake Redding and Laina Michaels, who uncover a dark conspiracy behind the seemingly fair system, leading them to fight for survival and expose the truth.

As they navigate the treacherous world of the Thinning, they discover that the system is not as it seems, and the fate of those who fail is far more sinister than advertised. Their journey forces them to confront powerful authorities and rally against a system designed to maintain control through fear and deception.

Plot:

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where overpopulation has led to a global crisis, the United Nations implements "The Thinning," an annual standardized test for all students from elementary school to high school. Those who pass continue their education and contribute to society, while those who fail are "thinned," a euphemism for execution, to reduce the population. Blake Redding, the privileged son of Governor Dean Redding, intentionally fails the test to save his girlfriend, Ellie, who was supposed to fail. However, due to a mix-up orchestrated by his father's aide, Blake passes, and Ellie is thinned.

Meanwhile, Laina Michaels, a brilliant student from the poorer districts, passes the test with flying colors. After the results are announced, Blake discovers that Ellie was indeed thinned, prompting him to confront his father. He then learns that Laina's test was swapped with another student's, and she was meant to fail. Governor Redding, worried about public perception, forces Laina to take the test again, but she still passes. Blake, distraught and suspicious, deliberately fails a subsequent test to be "thinned" himself, hoping to find Ellie.

Blake wakes up in an underground facility, discovering that "thinned" students are not killed but are instead forced into slave labor. He finds Ellie alive among them and attempts to organize a rebellion. Above ground, Laina uncovers evidence of widespread corruption and manipulation within the Thinning system, realizing that the tests are rigged to eliminate specific individuals and create a cheap labor force. With the help of a sympathetic teacher and other students, Laina broadcasts the truth to the world, exposing Governor Redding's conspiracy. The film ends with Blake leading the captive students in a revolt, as the world above reels from the shocking revelation, leaving the fate of the rebellion and the future of the Thinning uncertain.
