Summary
The World's End is a science-fiction action-comedy film that serves as the third and final installment in the "Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy," following Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007). The film centers on a group of five estranged, middle-aged friends who reunite to recreate an epic, unfinished 12-pub crawl—known as "The Golden Mile"—in their hometown. However, they soon discover that the seemingly quaint town has been secretly taken over by humanoid robots, forcing them to fight for humanity's survival while trying to finish the pub crawl.
Plot
Gary King (Simon Pegg), an immature, alcoholic man stuck reliving his teenage glory days, convinces his four childhood friends—Andy Knightley (Nick Frost), Steven Prince (Paddy Considine), Oliver "O-Man" Chamberlain (Martin Freeman), and Peter Page (Eddie Marsan)—to return to their hometown of Newton Haven. Gary's mission is to finally complete "The Golden Mile," the legendary 12-pub crawl they failed to finish 20 years earlier, ending at the final pub: The World's End. Andy, now a successful lawyer and a teetotaler due to a past trauma involving Gary, reluctantly agrees.
As they progress through the pubs, the group notices the townspeople are behaving strangely, and all the pubs now share a corporate, uniform appearance. In the fourth pub, Gary gets into a fight with a teenager, accidentally knocking off his head and revealing him to be an android filled with blue fluid. The friends realize that most of the town's inhabitants have been replaced by these alien-created robotic duplicates, nicknamed "Blanks." The group decides to continue the pub crawl as a cover to avoid suspicion, which leads to a series of frenetic, drunken martial arts battles with the Blanks.
The remaining friends, joined briefly by Oliver's sister Sam (Rosamund Pike), learn that the invasion is orchestrated by an alien collective known as The Network. The Network's goal is to assimilate humanity into a peaceful galactic community by replacing the individualistic and flawed human beings with compliant Blanks.
The pub crawl strains the already fragile friendships, culminating in a final confrontation between Gary and Andy at the last pub, The World's End. Andy confronts Gary over the past incident—a drunken car crash that nearly killed Andy and caused him to break his sobriety. Gary, admitting a recent suicide attempt, clings desperately to the pub crawl as the only thing he has left.
When Gary draws the final pint, he and Andy descend into a hidden chamber beneath the pub and confront The Network (voiced by Bill Nighy). The Network argues for its assimilation plan, but Gary, Andy, and a miraculously surviving Steven vehemently defend humanity's right to be flawed and free. Exasperated by their stubborn refusal to be "civilized," The Network withdraws its operation, triggering a massive electromagnetic pulse that destroys all Blanks and all modern electrical power on Earth.
In the post-apocalyptic aftermath, civilization has regressed to a medieval state. Andy narrates that he has reconciled with his family. The film ends with a now-sober Gary, who has found a strange new purpose, roaming the ruined landscape with Blank versions of his friends, still occasionally seeking a drink, but proudly ordering water.
