Plot:

The story of "Thor: The Dark World" begins with a prologue detailing an ancient war between the Asgardians and the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, led by Malekith. Thousands of years ago, during a rare cosmic event known as the Convergence, Malekith attempted to use a powerful, primordial force called the Aether to return the universe to its original state of darkness. The Asgardian king Bor, Odin's father, led his forces against the Dark Elves, defeating them and preventing their plan. Bor then sealed the Aether away in a hidden dimension, believing it to be destroyed, and Malekith and a remnant of his army went into a self-induced stasis, awaiting another Convergence.

In the present day, two years after the events of New York, Thor is diligently working to restore peace across the Nine Realms, aided by Heimdall, Sif, Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral. On Earth, Jane Foster is still heartbroken over Thor's sudden departure and continued absence. Her intern, Darcy Lewis, and Darcy's own intern, Ian Boothby, discover a series of increasingly bizarre gravitational anomalies appearing in abandoned warehouses in London. Investigating one such anomaly, Jane is inadvertently transported through a portal to another dimension, where she encounters the Aether. The ancient, liquid-like substance bonds with her, infusing her body with its immense power and causing a surge that alerts Malekith and his slumbering forces to its re-emergence.

Heimdall, noticing Jane's sudden disappearance from his sight, alerts Thor, who promptly returns to Earth. He finds Jane, disoriented and exhibiting strange powers, and immediately brings her to Asgard for examination. The Asgardian healer, Eir, discovers the Aether slowly killing Jane, confirming Odin's fears. Odin reveals the true nature of the Aether – it is one of the six Infinity Stones, capable of converting matter into dark energy. He warns Thor of Malekith's vengeful nature and the catastrophic implications if the Dark Elves manage to reclaim the Aether and harness its full power during the upcoming Convergence, which is now only days away.

Malekith and his lieutenant, Algrim (now transformed into the monstrous Kurse), awaken and launch a devastating attack on Asgard, exploiting a dimensional rift created by the Convergence. Their primary objective is to capture Jane and extract the Aether from her. The Asgardian forces, caught off guard, suffer heavy losses. During the assault, Malekith confronts Jane, but Thor's mother, Frigga, intervenes, using an illusion to protect Jane. Frigga valiantly fights Malekith but is tragically killed by Kurse. Her death devastates Thor and sends Odin into a deep, vengeful rage, hardening his resolve to keep Jane on Asgard, even if it means sacrificing her to protect the realm.

Grief-stricken and desperate to avenge his mother and protect Jane, Thor defies Odin's command. He realizes that Malekith will never stop pursuing Jane as long as the Aether resides within her. His only option is to lure Malekith away from Asgard and separate the Aether from Jane in a place where it can be destroyed. Knowing that only Loki possesses the knowledge of secret passages out of Asgard, Thor reluctantly seeks his imprisoned brother's help. Loki, still incarcerated for his crimes on Earth, initially resists but agrees to assist Thor after Thor appeals to his desire for vengeance against Malekith for Frigga's death, subtly hinting that Loki too grieved for their mother.

With the reluctant aid of Sif, Volstagg, and Fandral, Thor orchestrates a daring escape for himself, Loki, and Jane from Asgard. They use a Dark Elf skiff to travel through a secret portal to Svartalfheim, the desolate home world of the Dark Elves. Their plan is to confront Malekith there, extract the Aether from Jane, and then destroy it. The confrontation goes awry; Malekith manages to separate the Aether from Jane, absorbing its power and becoming even more formidable. During the ensuing battle, Kurse attacks Thor, nearly overpowering him. Loki intervenes, seemingly sacrificing himself to save Thor by stabbing Kurse with a dark energy grenade, which then detonates within Kurse's body. Loki, gravely wounded, seemingly dies in Thor's arms, expressing a final, poignant sentiment of pride in his brother.

Having failed to destroy the Aether, Thor, Jane, and their Asgardian allies return to Earth, arriving in London. With the help of Darcy, Ian, and a recently escaped and somewhat erratic Dr. Erik Selvig, Thor and Jane devise a scientific strategy to counter Malekith's plan. Selvig has been tracking the dimensional rifts, which appear in specific locations, and they realize they can use these rifts to their advantage.

The final battle commences at Greenwich, with Malekith beginning to transform the universe into darkness using the Aether. Thor confronts Malekith, engaging him in a brutal fight that sees them both involuntarily transported through various dimensional rifts appearing due to the Convergence. Thor cleverly uses the rifts to his advantage, disorienting Malekith and gaining the upper hand. Meanwhile, Jane, Darcy, Ian, and Selvig use specially designed devices to disrupt Malekith's plan, creating localized portals and interfering with the Aether's energy output. Thor eventually manages to separate Malekith from the Aether, trapping the Dark Elf leader in Svartalfheim. He then uses Malekith's own damaged ship, which Selvig's devices had transported to Svartalfheim, to crush and finally kill Malekith.

With Malekith defeated and the Aether no longer a threat, Thor returns to Asgard. He informs Odin that he cannot accept the throne, preferring to protect the Nine Realms as a champion rather than rule them. Odin appears to accept his decision, expressing approval. However, in a shocking twist, after Thor departs, Odin is revealed to be Loki in disguise, having faked his death on Svartalfheim and usurped the throne. The film concludes with this revelation, leaving Loki's true intentions and the fate of Asgard ambiguous. In a post-credits scene, Sif and Volstagg deliver the Aether to the Collector, stating that keeping two Infinity Stones (the Tesseract and the Aether) in one place (Asgard) is unwise. Another post-credits scene shows Thor returning to Earth and reuniting with Jane, while a final scene shows Loki, still disguised as Odin, on the throne.
