Plot:
In 1973, veteran British intelligence officer George Smiley is forced into retirement along with his boss, Control, after a botched mission in Hungary aimed at extracting a defecting Hungarian general. Control had suspected for years that there was a Soviet mole, codenamed "Gerald," operating at the highest echelons of MI6 (The Circus), and the Hungarian incident seemed to confirm his suspicions. After Control's death, Smiley is secretly reinstated by Cabinet Office under-secretary Oliver Lacon to investigate a claim from operative Ricki Tarr that there is indeed a mole.
Smiley, with the help of Peter Guillam, meticulously reviews past operations and personnel files, piecing together fragments of information. He interviews former colleagues, including the disgraced Jim Prideaux and a disillusioned Connie Sachs, slowly building a picture of the mole's network and methods. His investigation points to five senior Circus officers, including Percy Alleline (the new chief), Bill Haydon, Roy Bland, and Toby Esterhase, all of whom were part of Control's original suspect list. As Smiley delves deeper, the layers of deceit, personal ambition, and long-held secrets are peeled back, leading him to a shocking and painful discovery of betrayal at the very heart of the British intelligence establishment.
