Tramps (2016)
Summary
Tramps is a witty, off-kilter romantic comedy-drama that centers on two low-level operatives, Danny (Callum Turner) and Ellie (Grace Van Patten), who are hired for a simple, quick-money briefcase exchange in suburban Pennsylvania. The exchange goes disastrously wrong when they mistakenly swap a different, identical briefcase, setting them off on an unscheduled, chaotic adventure across the New York area to retrieve the valuable contents they lost. As they navigate their mistake, evade the criminals who hired them, and deal with family obligations, the two develop an unexpected and genuine connection.
Plot Points
The film is structured as a lighthearted caper that drives the romantic development between the leads:
-
The Fumbled Job: Danny is coerced by his older brother, a small-time criminal named Darren, to take on a delivery job. Ellie is the driver provided by the contact on the other end. They meet nervously and are tasked with swapping an anonymous briefcase at a rural location.
-
The Mistaken Identity: During the exchange, Ellie and Danny realize they swapped the briefcase with a third person who had an identical bag. The briefcase they hold contains only lunch, while the original, containing the real mystery item, is gone.
-
The Hunt: They are forced to work together, following a weak trail of clues that leads them from the suburbs back into the complex logistics of New York City and up to the Adirondacks. Their quest is to find the right briefcase and make things right before the shadowy figures behind the operation catch up to them.
-
Growing Closer: Over the course of their journey, which involves crashing a party and a series of awkward, vulnerable moments, Danny and Ellie drop their defenses. Danny, who is kind and trying to escape his family's criminal ties, and Ellie, who is pragmatic and reserved, realize they have similar goals: to escape their current circumstances and find a better life.
-
Resolution: The conclusion focuses less on the fate of the briefcase and more on the fate of their relationship, ending on a hopeful, open-ended note about their future together.
