Plot:

The film opens with Isabella "Bella" Swan's reluctant move from sunny Phoenix, Arizona, to the perpetually rainy and overcast town of Forks, Washington. Her mother, Renée, has remarried, and Bella decides to live with her police chief father, Charlie Swan, to give Renée space. Bella is an awkward, introverted teenager who struggles to fit in at her new school, Forks High. On her first day, she immediately notices the mysterious and strikingly beautiful Cullen siblings – Edward, Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, and Emmett – who sit apart from everyone else in the cafeteria, exhibiting an unusual pallor and an almost ethereal grace. Edward, in particular, catches her eye, and she observes his intense, almost pained gaze directed at her.

In biology class, Bella is assigned to sit next to Edward, who reacts to her presence with an extreme, visible discomfort, recoiling and holding his breath as if in agony. He abruptly leaves the classroom, further fueling Bella's confusion and a sense of rejection. Later, in the school parking lot, Bella is nearly crushed by a skidding van driven by Tyler Crowley. In an impossible feat, Edward appears instantaneously, stopping the van with his bare hand, leaving a significant dent, and pushing Bella out of harm's way. His denial of his superhuman intervention and insistence that Bella merely hit her head only deepens her suspicion and curiosity about him, as she knows what she saw was far from normal.

Jacob shares ancient tribal stories about the "cold ones" – vampires – who are described as beautiful, fast, and strong, but also dangerous blood-drinkers. He explains that the Cullen family are different, referring to themselves as "vegetarians" because they only hunt animals. This revelation resonates with Bella, connecting all the unexplained pieces of Edward's behavior. Confronted by Bella, Edward finally admits his true nature as a vampire, revealing his initial aversion was due to her blood's scent, which he found overwhelmingly tempting, and explains his family's unique dietary choice.

Despite the inherent danger, Bella and Edward fall deeply in love, embarking on a passionate yet forbidden romance. Edward demonstrates his powers, effortlessly carrying Bella through the forest at impossible speeds and revealing his diamond-like sparkling skin in the sunlight, a defense mechanism against human detection. The Cullens invite Bella to watch them play their unique version of baseball during a fierce thunderstorm, which masks the thunderous sounds of their superhuman hitting and running. During the game, a coven of nomadic vampires – the tracker James, his mate Victoria, and their companion Laurent – unexpectedly arrives, drawn by the sounds. Laurent, seeking to avoid conflict, attempts to explain their presence as merely passing through. However, James, a relentless and cunning tracker, immediately catches Bella's human scent. Intrigued by the presence of a human among the "vegetarians," James becomes obsessed with hunting Bella for sport. The Cullens, particularly Edward, immediately become fiercely protective, recognizing the grave danger James poses.

The Cullens devise a desperate plan to protect Bella. Alice and Jasper are tasked with taking Bella to Phoenix, hoping to throw James off their scent while the rest of the family prepares to confront him. However, James is a master manipulator. He calls Bella on her old phone, imitating her mother Renée's voice, claiming he has her mother hostage in Bella's old ballet studio from her childhood. Panicked and believing her mother's life is in imminent danger, Bella, against Alice and Jasper's warnings, manages to slip away from them, making her way alone to the deserted ballet studio, completely unaware that she is walking into a trap.

At the ballet studio, Bella finds James alone, who gleefully reveals his deception. He informs her that her mother is safe and unharmed, and that the call was merely a ploy to lure Bella away from the Cullens' protection. James brutally attacks Bella, breaking her leg and biting her wrist, injecting his venom into her bloodstream, intending to turn her into a vampire before killing her. Just as he is about to deliver a fatal blow, Edward and the rest of the Cullens burst in, having tracked Bella's scent. A brutal and intense fight ensues between James and the Cullens. Edward, Emmett, and Jasper combine their strength to tear James apart, eventually burning his remains to ensure he cannot regenerate and pose a further threat.

Following the harrowing confrontation, Edward frantically sucks the venom from Bella's wrist, agonizingly close to turning her into a vampire, but stops just in time, leaving a permanent scar as a reminder of the ordeal. Bella wakes up in a hospital bed, her leg in a cast, with her mother by her side, completely unaware of the true horror that transpired. Bella invents a cover story about falling down stairs to protect the Cullens. Later, at the prom, Bella dances with Edward, expressing her desire to be transformed into a vampire to be with him forever, to be his equal and escape the vulnerabilities of human life. Edward, however, is hesitant, wanting her to live a full human life, believing he has already condemned her soul. The film concludes with Edward holding Bella close, a moment of fragile peace, while James's mate, Victoria, is seen watching them from afar, her eyes burning with a desire for revenge, setting the stage for future conflicts.
