The film is narrated by an unseen narrator and begins by introducing two American friends: Vicky (Rebecca Hall), a sensible and pragmatic graduate student who is engaged to a stable man and is in Barcelona to research her master's thesis on Catalan identity; and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), a free-spirited and open-minded young woman who is recovering from a recent breakup and is looking for a new adventure.
The two friends are staying with Vicky's relatives, and they are soon captivated by Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), a handsome and charming artist they meet at a gallery. Juan Antonio, in a bold and direct manner, invites them to fly with him to Oviedo for the weekend, where he proposes a threesome with both of them. Vicky, ever the pragmatist, is taken aback and rejects the offer. Cristina, however, is intrigued and agrees to go. Vicky, out of a sense of responsibility for her friend, agrees to go with her.
In Oviedo, their weekend trip becomes a romantic adventure. Juan Antonio and Cristina's romance blossoms, but the relationship is platonic, at least initially. Their trip is a series of beautiful and romantic moments, which makes Vicky question her own life choices and her relationship.
The plot becomes more complex with the arrival of María Elena (Penélope Cruz), Juan Antonio's ex-wife. She is a brilliant but emotionally unstable artist who is known for her fiery temper.
