Plot:

The film opens with Eva Khatchadourian living a solitary, ostracized life in a small town, facing public hostility and financial hardship. She regularly visits her teenage son, Kevin, in prison. Through a non-linear narrative, the story flashes back to Eva's past. Before Kevin's birth, Eva was a free-spirited travel writer. Her pregnancy is unplanned and fraught with anxiety. Kevin is depicted as a challenging infant and toddler, exhibiting a strong aversion to his mother, resisting her affection, and refusing to be potty-trained. As he grows, his behavior becomes more disturbing; he is manipulative, particularly towards his father Franklin, and displays a chilling lack of empathy.

Eva and Franklin later have a daughter, Celia, whom Kevin immediately resents. He commits several acts of cruelty towards Celia, including deliberately causing her to lose an eye in an "accident" and killing her pet hamster. Eva suspects Kevin's malevolence but struggles to convince Franklin, who often dismisses her concerns. The tension between Eva and Kevin escalates, culminating in a devastating event where Kevin, at age 16, locks his father and sister in the house and murders them with a crossbow before going to his high school and committing a massacre, killing several classmates and a teacher. In her final visit to Kevin in prison, she asks him this question, and he briefly leans into her for comfort, admitting he once thought he knew the answer but now is "not so sure."
