Plot:

The story begins with Cheryl Strayed at a low point in her life, having lost her beloved mother, Bobbi, to cancer, which led to her spiraling into heroin use and promiscuity, ultimately destroying her marriage to Paul. In a desperate attempt to reclaim her life and confront her grief, she decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from the Mojave Desert to the Bridge of the Gods on the Columbia River, a distance of over a thousand miles, with no prior long-distance hiking experience.

The hike is fraught with physical hardship and emotional torment. Cheryl carries an oversized backpack she nicknames "Monster," endures extreme weather, encounters dangerous wildlife, and battles loneliness and self-doubt. Throughout her journey, flashbacks vividly recount key moments of her past: her loving relationship with her mother, Bobbi; the devastating impact of Bobbi's death; and her struggles with addiction and infidelity. These memories intertwine with her present-day challenges, forcing her to confront the pain she has been trying to outrun. As she pushes through exhaustion, injury, and despair, Cheryl slowly begins to process her grief, forgive herself, and find a path towards healing and acceptance, culminating in a profound moment of reflection at the end of her extraordinary trek.
