X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (2014)

Summary:

In a dystopian future where Sentinels hunt mutants and humans with the mutant gene, the last surviving X-Men and their allies face extinction. Their only hope lies in a desperate plan to alter history: sending Wolverine's consciousness back to 1973 to prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, the creator of the Sentinel program. Plot:

The film opens in a bleak, post-apocalyptic 2023, where mutant and human survivors are systematically hunted by advanced, adaptable Sentinels. These terrifying robots can evolve to counter any mutant power, thanks to DNA harvested from Mystique in the past. A desperate band of X-Men, including Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Bishop, Warpath, Sunspot, Colossus, Storm, and Blink, are making a last stand in Moscow. They are quickly overwhelmed by the Sentinels, but Kitty Pryde uses her phasing ability, now evolved to send a person's consciousness back in time, to warn their past selves, allowing them to escape the immediate threat. This tactic, however, only delays the inevitable.

The surviving mutants, including an aged Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto), convene in a hidden temple in China. They explain to Wolverine that the Sentinels' existence stems from a single, catastrophic event in 1973: Mystique's assassination of Bolivar Trask, the architect of the Sentinel program. Her capture after the act led to her DNA being used to perfect the Sentinels, making them adaptable to any mutant ability. To prevent this future, someone must go back further than Kitty can sustain – a journey only Wolverine, with his extraordinary healing factor, can survive. His mission: find Mystique before she kills Trask and stop her, thereby preventing the dark timeline.

Wolverine's consciousness is sent back to 1973, where he awakens in his younger body. He quickly finds himself in a seedy hotel, where he is attacked by gangsters, showcasing his raw, unrefined adamantium claws. His first objective is to locate Professor Charles Xavier, whom he finds living in a dilapidated mansion with Hank McCoy (Beast). This younger Charles is a shadow of his future self, crippled by the trauma of losing his students and the Vietnam War. He has been self-medicating with a serum developed by Beast, which allows him to walk but suppresses his mutant powers, effectively isolating him from the minds of others and the pain they cause him. Wolverine struggles to convince the cynical Charles and the wary Hank of the impending doom and the necessity of their mission.

Charles, initially resistant, is eventually swayed by Wolverine's desperate pleas and the direness of the future. He reveals that Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) is imprisoned beneath the Pentagon for his alleged role in John F. Kennedy's assassination. The trio, now joined by Quicksilver, a super-fast mutant, orchestrate a daring prison break. Quicksilver's incredible speed proves instrumental, as he single-handedly disarms guards and manipulates bullets in a now-iconic sequence, freeing Magneto. Magneto, still embittered and distrustful, reluctantly agrees to help, understanding the gravity of the Sentinel threat, but his methods remain radical and uncompromising.

The team learns that Mystique is tracking Bolivar Trask, who is lobbying the U.S. government for his Sentinel program, arguing that mutants pose an existential threat. Her first attempt to assassinate Trask occurs at the Paris Peace Accords. Mystique, disguised as a Vietnamese general, infiltrates the meeting. As she prepares to shoot Trask, Magneto, using his powers to manipulate the metal in her gun, diverts her shot. A chaotic struggle ensues, with Beast transforming to protect Trask, and Mystique engaging in a brutal fight. During the skirmish, Trask's security forces manage to collect a sample of Mystique's blood after she is injured. This DNA sample is the crucial element that enables Trask to create the adaptable Sentinels in the future. The incident also publicly exposes the existence of mutants, fueling Trask's anti-mutant agenda and accelerating the Sentinel program.

With Mystique's DNA now in Trask's hands, the future timeline is still on track for disaster. The team realizes they must prevent Trask from using the DNA sample and stop Mystique from making any further attempts on his life, which would only solidify the public's fear and support for the Sentinels. They track Mystique to Washington D.C., where Trask is set to present his Sentinel prototypes to the President. Magneto, however, has a different, more extreme plan. He infiltrates Trask's lab, retrieves his helmet (which blocks telepathic interference), and enhances the Sentinel prototypes with a magnetic polymer, making them immune to his own powers and giving him control over them.

The climax unfolds at a televised event outside the White House, where Trask is showcasing his Sentinels. Magneto arrives, levitating Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium around the White House, using it as a fortress to contain the President, Trask, and the world leaders. His intention is to expose mutants to the world by having Mystique kill Trask on live television, believing that this will unite mutantkind against a common enemy. He then plans to eliminate the humans who threaten them, including the President. Charles, struggling to regain his full powers without Beast's serum, attempts to reach Mystique telepathically, urging her to choose a different path. Wolverine, meanwhile, is overwhelmed by future versions of Sentinels within his mind, causing him immense pain and disrupting his connection to the past.

As the Sentinels attack the X-Men and the Secret Service, Mystique, torn between her rage and Charles's pleas, confronts Trask. Beast intervenes, fighting Magneto to prevent him from carrying out his genocidal plan. Wolverine, still battling the mental onslaught from the future, is accidentally impaled by Magneto with metal rebar, pinning him to the ground. In the future, Kitty Pryde struggles to maintain the temporal link as Wolverine's body begins to destabilize. Back in 1973, Charles finally breaks through to Mystique, reminding her of the values they once shared and appealing to her compassion. Just as Mystique prepares to shoot Trask, she sees the fear and hatred in his eyes, and the potential for a different future in Charles's mind. She lowers her weapon, choosing not to kill him.

Mystique's decision to spare Trask's life changes everything. The world witnesses a mutant saving the President and preventing a catastrophe, rather than causing one. This act of heroism changes public perception, leading to the cancellation of the Sentinel program and Trask's arrest. Wolverine's consciousness is pulled back to the future, where he awakens in a completely altered timeline. The dystopian 2023 is gone. Instead, he finds himself back at the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where Jean Grey and Cyclops, who were dead in the original timeline, are alive and well, along with many other familiar faces. The future is bright, and the X-Men are a thriving institution, though the details of how this new history unfolded remain a mystery to Wolverine.

In a post-credits scene, in ancient Egypt, a crowd of people chant "En Sabah Nur" as a blue-skinned mutant with telekinetic powers effortlessly constructs pyramids, watched by four horsemen.
