YOUTH (2015)
Summary:
Youth is a poignant and visually stunning drama directed by Paolo Sorrentino, exploring themes of aging, memory, art, and the passage of time. The film centers on two lifelong friends, Fred Ballinger, a retired classical composer and conductor, and Mick Boyle, an active film director, who are vacationing together at an exclusive luxury spa resort in the Swiss Alps.
Amidst the breathtaking scenery and the eclectic mix of other guests, including a celebrated actor, a Miss Universe, and a young masseuse, Fred and Mick reflect on their pasts, their careers, their relationships with their families, and their impending futures, confronting the joys and sorrows of getting older while still seeking meaning and inspiration.

Plot:
Fred Ballinger, an octogenarian composer, steadfastly refuses a request from an emissary of Queen Elizabeth II to perform his most famous work, "Simple Song #3," for Prince Philip's birthday, claiming he has no interest in conducting anymore. Meanwhile, his best friend, Mick Boyle, struggles with writing the screenplay for his supposed "last important film," working with a team of young writers while battling creative blocks and the perceived decline of his legacy.
As they observe the lives of other guests – a disillusioned actor preparing for a new role, a young couple falling in love, and Mick's own daughter Lena grappling with her marital breakdown – Fred and Mick engage in deep, often humorous, conversations about their lives. Fred's estranged daughter, Lena, who is also his manager, confronts him about his emotional distance, particularly regarding her mother, his wife. The film beautifully weaves together their personal reflections with surreal dream sequences and striking visual metaphors, ultimately leading to a moment of unexpected performance and a quiet acceptance of life's final movements.
